W2K startup scripts!
-
My company is just now moving to W2K. I believe it took them this long so that they write the startup script from H3LL which keeps users from changing their background, screen savers and homepage. This...used to be my home page! Now I'm forced into a worthless intranet homepage! I think you will agree...something has to be done. Has anyone ever written a script to outdo a mandatory startup script which would run after the startup script and put everything back? I want Code Project to be my home!!! ed And right after the lawyers goes anybody who writes startup scripts!

I'd guess it's not really the script doing it, but win2k policies that are probably copied down to your machine at login (which I don't think is done with the script, but some other MS magic). My guess is that you're out of luck. But I'm usually wrong so I'm sure there's probably a way, whether it's getting the admin pw, or something else. ;) -Lunchy

I know a guy who seems to be an absolute guru when it comes to w2k policies and he has used them to lockout systems in schools and public libraries for his clients and he says they are pretty much impossible to circumvent when set up properly. One odd thing that he told me about which may be well known but came as a surprise to me is that he can tell just about anything a user does or even attempts to change to circumvent the security settings or make any settings changes anywhere in Windows based on settings that are apparently configurable as part of policies. He has had clients call him and tell him there is a problem with the computer and he can show them the exact time and date they made some change to windows configuration (that they were told not to) that started the problem.

W2k allows you to do that through policies and is a lot easier than scripts. You'll find all the details in the W2k help, or if not there then certainly on Technet. Michael :-)

Can you edit icons on your desktop/quick launch bar? If so, you can probably just change the properties for the IE launch icon to include a path to CP. So instead of "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IExplore.exe" it would be "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IExplore.exe "http://www.codeproject.com". Also, if you can't change these but you can add an icon, just add a shortcur to CP to your desktop/quick launch bar.
