Maybe next time the Linux folks should work on making the whole car open source.

Impossible. The gasoline is closed source, then the car will be "shared source[^]".;P

Not true! Don't Indy 500 cars run on Methanol, which any 'ol person with a distillery and an appetite for backyard science can brew up? That's about as open source as you can get :-)

Thats like the launch of Vista making the penguins wet their pants. I believe the Vista car couldn't enter as only 100 of it's components would work with it instead of all of them!!

Oh, uh, good question. Now technically speaking, uhh, let's say, put me down as a... 'Whatever'?

Anyway I thought that the fact the comunity paid to get the car in the race showed just how together the Linux comunity is...... ..... and anyway I hear that Vista's got serious issue's with it's drivers!! ;P

Personally I'd bet that Linux does infringe on a few accidently, but I think that Microsoft should leave well alone anyway and most patient laws to do with software are stupid. Yeah the community is together alright ... shame it's supporting a lame horse so to speak ;) And Microsoft don't do the drivers ... they just make the vehicle :P Atleast when the drivers crash Vista it can recover rather than going down lol

Yes, but you hafta admit its nice when you don't NEED to recover from a driver crash... because the drivers aren't crashing... Sounds suspiciously like Linux to me. No, Microsoft don't do them drivers.

Well it all comes down to the classic arguement. If your windows box is crashing then it's most likly because you bought cheap and crap hardware or installed dogdy drivers. Many of my desktops and servers have run on windows for months without any need of a reboot. Back in the 9x days comments like "yeah but windows crashes all the time" were actually valid, but from 98SE onwards things got much more stable.

It gets that excuse, but it's very rare that Windows users erroneously give stability as a bad point for Linux :P It's much more common for Linux zealots (not that I'm accusing you of being a zealot) to stick with the old arguments which don't work any more with the changes in software and hardware. I think Linux has it's place and that like everything else you use the right tool for the right job :) I was just having some friendly banter with The_Great_Gonzo in this thread and it was all tongue in cheek.

To be honest it is very easy to wind you windoz guys up!! :-D As far as patents go I'm against them (like most develoers I know and yes that is including Windows developers as well) and I think it would be very silly of Microsoft to start something which in effect could finish them off. Lets face, no one wants to see the end of Microsoft but I think people would like to see them have some competiion. Oh and if they did start a patent fight then I think IBM, Bell, Xerox and the other early OS inovators might come out and upset poor old Steve (there might not be enough chairs in Redmond!!) As far as the car goes well it's put Linux in the news and like a bad advert has worked as people are talking about it. It's just a shame it could have done better as it appears to really only got their on the sponsor ship of the comunity. And anyway sitting here typing this in Konqueror running on Debian on my new Thinkpad I know that linux and windows drivers can be as bad as one another..... the differnce is I can get the code and fix mine ;P

Oh, uh, good question. Now technically speaking, uhh, let's say, put me down as a... 'Whatever'?

Not true! Don't Indy 500 cars run on Methanol, which any 'ol person with a distillery and an appetite for backyard science can brew up? That's about as open source as you can get :-)

They run on pure ethanol in the IRL now, which is *grain* moonshine (methanol is wood alcohol, not fit for drinkin). I am considering converting my RX-7 to run on it. It's just as powerful as gasoline, completely renewable and burns clean. NASCAR has used it for years, and this year the F-1 and CART series also picked it up as an option. So far, the ethanol cars are showing themselves to be just as good as the old-skool cars. I think they need to make a bigger deal out of it on the TV broadcasts, so people will realize how good it is as an alternative to oil-based fuels. Most racing people know this already, but the general public could use an education. People have a lot of misconceptions about ethanol cars.

That race sucked this year. Cancelled for rain and then finished later. The TV broadcast sucked. It's a good thing there was NASCAR on or it would have been a No Racing Weekend. God I sooo need to get my car ready... watching racing drives me nuts.
