The situation with the lake sounds just like when we used to live approx 200ft from a church... Except for we just had to get used to it all... Roswell

That would suck. I would hate to have to listen to gospel music all day.

I live across from the public boat ramp for a small lake that once connected to the Missouri River. We looked at the house last year in May before the major lake traffic and closed in June. For most of the time, we have no issues with the lake folk. However, on major holidays like Memorial Day, all decorum is thrown out the window along with their trash into my yard. The way the road is set up, people constantly block my driveway while waiting in line to get to the boat dock. On Saturday alone I had to tell three people they couldn't block my driveway. All of them huffed about it. My neighbor is a fireman and paramedic and also has the same problem. Tonight our city council held a discussion on possible solutions to all the problems (road congestion, lake congestion, people driving too fast on the lake etc). While most people agreed mostly with the proposed solutions, you always have a few people who make you laugh. Guy 1: "Well I know there is a problem with trash on the lake. We should contact the boat manufacturers and force them to install trash cans on their boats. I carry a 40 quart plastic kitchen trash can for all my stuff." Guy 2: "We don't need more laws. We just need to enforce the ones we have." Yes, I am sure the two local cops have nothing better to do than make sure people don't pollute the lake or ticket people blocking my driveway (although I did have to call once because the person was not even in their car). Guy 3: "Just paint the curbs yellow." Oh, yes, that will work! Because people right now can't see they are COMPLETELY blocking my driveway, but magic yellow paint will stop them! Guy 4: [Part of the proposal includes taking out the adjacent park for additional parking.] I can't remember the direct quote, but basically it was, "Think of the kids, man!" I was wondering if any other CPians have been embroiled in a local debate. What was the issue? Which side did you take and why? Who won and why?

I own a wonderfully beat up old ute ( pickup truck ). People get out of my way, because they invariably have more to lose than I do. I'd love for someone to block my driveway and huff about having to move....

it's not so much gospel music as rude drivers, as is in your case...luckily for us we've moved out of there in summer of '03 Roswell

Tell me about it. They all have this sense of entitlement in which they think anything around the boat ramp is theirs to do with what they wish. But I'm 5'9" and broad shouldered. When I tell them to move they eventually do. I also have some choice words and phrases.

Let them block your driveway, call the police to remove the cars that block the driveway. Not only will this make people aware that it _is_ actually a nuisance for you that they block your driveway, but the police will soon get tired of coming to remove cars and, on these special affluence days, will come and see to it that people don't park everywhere before being called. That's their job, after all. OR Go for the Graus method and slightly push your driveway open with a bigger car.

Simple solution, block your own driveway. New Yorkers have been doing this for years. No problem. As for the pollution problem, just start giving fines to the boat companies. They have the option of policing their own actions, or the fines will pay for a private garbage collection. Again, no problem.

I think the problem isn't people parking along the shoulder blocking it but a congested road and idiots not being willing to let her pull out, the former situation would make arguing about the problem with the responsible idiots very difficult. If I'm mistaken, as satisfying as using a rusty bumper to push a shiny beemer out of the way is, I'd recommend contracting with a towing company, posting a sign, and having the offending vehicles towed off to the impound lot.

I'm involved in one now. Wall-Mart is putting in a new store about a mile from my house which is going to overload all the roads, which won't be upgraded until after the store is built. Even then the current roads are already congested, and this is only going to make it worse. We need development that reduces car traffic and fits into the neighborhood. The developers and Wall-Mart are lying[^] about the amount of traffic the store will generate in all their estimates as well. Plus they are making "concessions" like dropping 5,000 sq. feet from the 180,000+ sq. ft store, but only if the neighborhood groups stop protesting the store. Wall-Mart also thinks that because their store will have a parking garage, be 2 level and have a limestone exterior it will be appealing to urban residents. I have no doubt that the store is going to be built, but I'm hoping that it is going to crash and burn. It's not going to be convenient for people driving in from the suburbs and I doubt many of the locals are going to go at least that's what I'm hoping.

Yeah, A local lumberyard near my house wanted to expand, but they needed a zoning change to do it. Adjacent homeowners complained, but we were completely disorganized and made a hash out of the arguments, which ranged from the reasonable "We're OK with it if you modify the proposal to minimize impact, etc." to the hysterical "You're hurting our children and ruining our neighborhood!" After the homeowners had their say at a town meeting, the lumberyard owners stood up to say that if they didn't get all of the requested zoning variances, they were leaving town. Guess what? They got all of the variances with no changes. So much for equal protection of the law. And our tax bill went up.
