Non-google search engines?
-
I somehow subjective when it comes to clusty. Fact is that I did a small website about a year ago and uploaded to a free host. I added no references to this site on forums or other sites. Up to this day google can't find it, while on clusty it comes up in the first page of the search results.
This is the first time I am ever hearing about clusty. Honestly, can you live without google? There is no sane reason why I should use another search engine instead of google. X|

I'll see if I can in the following days. Starting from now, my homepage is set to live.com. For me, the only thing that sets google apart from all the others is the fact that I can personalize the search to return only pages in my own language. Oh, and the "I'm feeling lucky button" which I have never used. Other than that, I don't see any superiority of google in terms of search speed or relevance of the results. What I don't like about google is that they have grown from a handful of young enthusiastic people to a big fat multi-billion dollar corporation which starts swallowing smaller companies whole and even applies politically-based censorship.

Do an image search on live.com.

What search engines other than google do you use? My personal favorite is clusty.com. I also like MS's live.com, especially it's image search feature, which is way better than google's.
Ever tried this one ? http://www.msdewey.com/[^] :->

Pretty much none, but occasionally Live and Yahoo. I find that the overall usability of Google combined with toolbar and Firefox extensions trumps any occasional feature that might be better done in the other search engines. However, for me, nothing is ever cast in stone.

Well, Microsoft could be considered much the same as Google in your last sentence. However, Microsoft do not rely solely on advertising revenue and therefore could possibly be trusted a little more to respect my privacy, whereas Google seem to be trying to invade privacy at every possible opportunity in order to secure a few more advertising bucks. No thanks - I'm opting out.

I disagree. Microsoft's software is known to "phone home" without any apparent reason and without notifying the user beforehand, even silently bypassing their own "firewall" to do so. (FYI: The same is true for Zonelabs and ZoneAlarm). And - different from Google - Microsoft never mentioned this kind of "stealthy" surveillance in their EULA. Google always states which data it will use for which purpose, should you decide to use their software. Microsoft only ever explains after someone has discovered their latest meta-trojan. Just like Sony and their Copy-Protection Incident.

I really like Live.com. I find the map feature and image search very useful and intuitive. I find the results are more relevant and have less "spam" than Google and Yahoo. On top of that, I am not convinced in Google's "do no evil" motto. The direction they are heading, their political censorship, their scam advertising program called Google Adsense (many people dislike Adsense, but use it because it pays well -- if you ever get paid). Sure, MS isn't the pinnacle of perfection either, but I feel more comfortable on Live.com than Google.com.
