In addition to what leckey said, not only are we banking with different banks in different countries, there is also (almost certainly) a currency conversion charge. I will ask them what the charge will be though.
Cheers, Vıkram.

I have to pay my cousin in the US a substantial amount of money. What is the cheapest option? Time is not of great importance here; it's OK if it takes a week or so. This is a one-time payment. Anybody who says Give it to me; I'll deliver it to him will get smacked :-D [EDIT]Thanks for the responses, everybody. :) I spoke to my bank and they said I can get a "Dollar Demand Draft" for upto Rs. 1,00,000 by paying a surcharge as little as Rs. 300. They also said my cousin won't be docked anything when he tries to encash it. :~ New questions: 1. Anybody in the US received this Dollar DD? 2. Is my bank right in saying my cousin won't be docked anything? Other payment suggestions are welcome, though I think this is very cool. Hey vikram, the better way is if you have an Account in ICICI Bank you can transfer money to any part of the world. I think by means of ICICI you can transfe the funds in a day or two.

Vikram, Is PayPal ok? We can pay here from creditcard. I think withdrawing from PayPal to a US bank account should be easy right?

In a way I think that would be better. I normally use this route to see that exchanges are done with too much risk. :)

We use Western Union Money Transfers here in Pakistan. That is reliable enough and not that expensive. Don't know if it is there in India or not.

I've heard lots of bad things about them. People are not happy with them. From the comments I've read they are the most incompetent bank in the world. Not the way to complain about a bank[^] Trying to improve a tarnished reputation[^]

So far you don't have a problem with them. But given the comments I would guess that you are one of the few lucky ones.

A rough estimate. Well somewhere in the range of $8-9 for $1000. These are approximately 6 month old rates.

Vikram, You could do a wire-transfer (wire transfer fees may be US$25-45, but it's safe and gets to his account within 24-48 hours). I've never heard anyone use a Dollar Demand Draft and am not aware of whether that has any hidden costs at the receiving end. I always use wire transfers even though they cost extra. I've done them between US, Canada, India for years now without any hassles.
