What is the cheapest way to transfer money from India to the US? [modified]
-
I have to pay my cousin in the US a substantial amount of money. What is the cheapest option? Time is not of great importance here; it's OK if it takes a week or so. This is a one-time payment. Anybody who says Give it to me; I'll deliver it to him will get smacked :-D [EDIT]Thanks for the responses, everybody. :) I spoke to my bank and they said I can get a "Dollar Demand Draft" for upto Rs. 1,00,000 by paying a surcharge as little as Rs. 300. They also said my cousin won't be docked anything when he tries to encash it. :~ New questions: 1. Anybody in the US received this Dollar DD? 2. Is my bank right in saying my cousin won't be docked anything? Other payment suggestions are welcome, though I think this is very cool. Cheers, Vıkram.

Vikram, You could do a wire-transfer (wire transfer fees may be US$25-45, but it's safe and gets to his account within 24-48 hours). I've never heard anyone use a Dollar Demand Draft and am not aware of whether that has any hidden costs at the receiving end. I always use wire transfers even though they cost extra. I've done them between US, Canada, India for years now without any hassles.

Do you know how much it costs? A rough estimate will do.

That depends on the amount of money that you want to send, and the country that you are sending the money to.

I guess they mean a regular DD, like one given in the US. :~

That's too much. :wtf: Besides, it's very different from what Amir Butt said. Maybe Pakistan gets special concessions from the US? :->

Aamir Butt is talking about Western Union money transfer (that's not the same as a regular bank initiated wire transfer) A really cheap alternative is to just send him a check from your Indian bank. It may take 3-8 weeks to clear, and he'll also get a very bad conversion rate, but you could adjust for that by including an extra 1000 rupees or so. When I put Canadian checks in my US bank account, it took 2-3 weeks to clear, but for India I am pretty sure you'd see twice the delay (hence my estimate of 3-8 weeks).

Un-freakin' believable. You people are pathetic - you can't laugh at yourselves even a little bit.... Moderating out sarcasm doesn't make it go away - it only illustrates your small-mindedness.

I used dollar DD to pay university application fees from india and never had any problems. Though i am not sure if your cousin will be charged anything. It's basically same as cashier's check. Ankita

The cheapest way to do this from India.... ....on a small, personal scale ....is stay there & buy imported Yankee stuff ....like MS, McD's and, um, weapons. (naff drumcrash signalling bad joke) (I dont mean any offence by this I just dislike globalisation)
Exclusivity is desirable & inclusiveness is undemocratic.

Ah, thanks, Ankita. I was a bit worried that nobody had heard of it.
