Shoot, most of the college graduates that I work with would have a hard time even defining half of those words, much less using them correctly in a sentence!

When I was last along the border (17 years ago) most tourist trap type businesses listed prices in both currencies. If a store clerk isn't alert or in a vending machine you can get away with using the others coins (when equivalent) but generally speaking you still have to change your currency since they aren't equal in value.

"Work"? No, not really. I mean, they don't fall to dust, but you can't use them interchangeably unless you're paying a really careless merchant. Smaller coins do tend to find their way into circulation though, just because they tend to be similar in both appearance and value. I've no idea how US currency is treated in Canada... presumably, it's horded and used for all the really important transactions... :rolleyes:

I first read Red Storm Rising in 4th grade over christmas break. I'd been enjoying adult level novels for maybe a year or two at that point but hadn't tackled any megabooks yet. In high school my book habit was 4 novels/week during the school year, 8 or 9 during the summer. My current average is about 2.5/week, but has spiked at 1/day for half a month occasionally. You can't not get a large vocabulary if you're reading alot of stuff. :)

That is extremely silly. I'm a high school graduate, an avid reader all my life. English was my absolute best area of study in school and I know probably 50% of those words, could use a further 20% correctly in a sentence but am not certain about the definition and I would use only about 5% in any sort of conversation with anyone because they are completely unnecessary and would only end up making me look like a pretentious twat.

US dollars work *everywhere* in Canada because we're used to US tourists. In my experience most US business even many right on the border don't accept Canadian money or have a ridiculous rate of exchange for it. Once I worked in a retail store and we used to get a lot of American tourists in who by and large were no different than anyone else except for this one guy who only had US bills and he insisted that I give him US change including coins! I'm not joking and this was no where near the border, it was in the interior of BC. He acted like a complete dickhead before that and I was already pissed off at him. He was the poster guy for the infamous "Ugly american tourist". I told him to take a flying fuck as politely as my anger allowed. You don't come into my country and act that way, I won't have it.

True but not those words; many if not most of the words on that list are rarely used in any context other than the author showing off their vocabulary unnecessarily. I read a *lot*. A freakish lot. I have probably read hundreds of thousands of books since the age of 5 or 6 to date. While I recognize on sight most of the words on that list I would be hard pressed to define at least 20% of them. Many of those words are simply not used in any normal context unless you are reading something written by pretentious gits for pretentious gits.
