I managed to talk in Dr. Suess rhyme for all of 24 hours (all communication, even talking at work, except in official meetings or presentations), and people were ready to shoot me. :) but it was fun. I had an English professor in college who hates passive verbs. We had to do a report on our school computer use policy with no passive verbs. I have tried not using passive verbs in my daily conversations but I was told that I talk 'too smart.' (This was from my boss at Citibank. I can't believe I was basically asked to 'dumb it down.')

very common reaction. Most "common" communication is recommended to be no higher than 7th grade level, and should only rarely exceed 6th grade level. The average populace of the USA is considered to use no higher than 8th grade English on a day to day basis, so staying at 7th or 6th grade level gets you the most bang for your buck in communication.

I have not had TV for the last 3 months, and I only heard about it recently. So I have not seen it, only heard about it. I will get to see it soon, it is one of my fiancee's son's favorites. I just moved to where I can receive TV over air, so I need to see what channels I have.

I can see where her son would like it. He probably feels like a genius compared to the adult contestants. I doubt they will ever have a programmer or software engineer on the show. We're definately smarter than a 5th grader (even though I can't spell as well as one anymore).

less sarcastically, if the kid decides to become a linguistics major he'll be in better shape than most of his classmates. Klingon's often used as a language that none of the students know to put everyone on equal footing. :rolleyes: IMO if that was the goal they should require the pdh's to each do several years of fieldwork in the boonies to learn an undocumented and endangered language and use that when teaching Language None Of The Students Speak 101. This would have the side effect of actually making the the profs do something useful before getting their tenured sinecures. :laugh:

Strangely enough what you describe ties into what my dad is doing for his phd thesis. Part of his work was taking hundreds of cassette tapes recorded many years ago with recorded stories in a nearly dead native Canadian language in the Yukon and going back to the area to translate them with the help of some of the last native speakers. His thesis isn't actually about the language itself but it's astounding how many languages are on the brink of extinction or recently become extinct.

He worries when he gets below a 100% at school. Once he discovered extra credit his grades typically stay above 100% in private education. He's smarter than me (of course there are days I feel that is not difficult). :) But he and I have a similar memory storage, so he struggles more in the same areas I do... like spelling. :)
