Look the positive side: Windows Server 2008 requires 8Gb (minimal) and 80Gb (full). 88.8mb looks like a floppy drive now, isn't? :-D

HP and software are two terms that one should never coin together in a single sentence X| . I've just got my HP TX1016AU yesterday and I had to remove a bunch of HP free software from it. I still have to remove Norton Internet security 2007 from it, which is taking a "Lions share" of the processor time, for no good reason.

With hardware vendors trying to improve on their deliverables, the software drivers try to take a cool honey mooning resort on the performance of the hardware rather than optimizing it to perform best with minimal resources. The 'coding horrors' forum stands as a silent succinct testimony for this.

I wonder what is the stuff that they put into a webcam software to make it 88MB. I hate such software and I am sure never to install any such thing. Yahoo messenger (It installs some 50 MB of stuff and adds a toolbar by default. Crap!) is another such thing. After a CPian suggested, I tried GTalk, which is just awesome. GTalk: One executable file and that is the software.

The driver download itself was 88mb, but I would venture that a good portion of that was a) the installer itself, and b) useless apps that have nothing to do with the driver. How much room on the hard drive did the driver actually require?

Installers have been recommending that for years. Why? Because they have to write to the registry, and may be placing files in system32. If you don't want to disable that stuff, then don't run that stuff.

What? The drivers for a web cam shouldn't be more than 1MB... And I totally agree... space is not free. Here's my intern: Dustin: Why did you do that? Jasmine: Because it frees up a MB of memory that I don't need anymore. Dustin: So? Jasmine: It's not right to hang on to memory you're not using anymore. Dustin: But people have lots of memory - Gigs of it! You might need it again. Jasmine: Just go back to work, dude. Drives me nuts. Memory management is just not important to some people... which is why using FireFox for a few hours will eat up all your memory... they never bother to release it. There is no reason for that... you can open up 6 tabs and your usage goes up to 300MB or so, but even if you close the tabs, it stays up there... why? FF is such a good app I would think there is a reason for it, but I suspect it's just lazy programming. Mine's eating 116MB right now and I only have this one window open. Yikes... I consider this the same thing as not flushing the toilet. It's extra work, but you know...

Logitech. They are good. It installs a webcam client program and control panels and the drivers. They pushed out an update last week and it was a pretty big download.
