Did you know that Mohammad had a 9 year old wife? http://www.muslimhope.com/AishaNine.htm

Yes, he was a pedophile. And if you say that out loud, muslims become very angry. :)

Do you have any objections to that? I will rather like to have the radicals spend time drinking "holy water" than blowing themselves up.

Actually, as far as I'm concerned, they can blow themselves up as well, if they want, as long as they don't take any unwilling or unaware others with them.

well, that may be true by modern standards, but how different was his behaviour to those around him ? The age of consent in New York at the turn of the century was 12.

That's a good point! Now will you consider such an act immoral now? If yes then doesn't morality depend on time, place and circumstances.

Sure - I'm not saying that I think it was acceptable, precisely because I see it through the eyes of a member of modern society. I'm saying, it's not right to assume that someone who lived in a different society to the one we live in, by the rules of our society. No-one should be scandalised about the number of US presidents who 'owned' slaves, for example. But, if GWB turns out to have slaves, then that's another matter.

I am not arguing whether it was right or wrong then. :) My point is: many of today's muslims become infuriated for making the simplest of simplest observations: he was a pedophile.

Yes, that is probably true. The problem is, if one accepts he was a holy man, then one would expect him to rise above the mores of his time. If you think he was just some guy, then you'd expect him to do the same as those around him.

yes, morality is definately a construct of society, that's my point. I'd still think it was wrong, but I'm a product of a society that causes me to think that. I also assume that his 9 yo wife was similar in terms of mental age to my 10 yo daughter, when the truth is she probably had adulthood thrust upon her far younger than kids do today. I read an interesting book by Neil Postman on the subject of the construct of childhood, and how it was unknown in the West as well, 1000 years ago. Childhood as a seperate stage of life, or something to be cherished, is a relatively new idea, and in many ways, it revolves around the idea of reading. If adult society is build on the ability to read and write to pass on and store information, one is not ready to take part until one has had time to learn how to do these things.

Do you not believe that you eat the flesh & drink the blood of Jesus (peace be upon him)? What is more is that in your belief you are devouring part of a God...

If her father was alive, that points towards it being in line with the way society worked at the time. I guess that's only a problem if you want to claim Mohammed was anything more than an example of a person of his times.

Why are you amazed? Assuming what HotAir came out of that site has any truth to it; do you not do something bigger? Do you not believe that you eat the flesh & drink the blood of Jesus (peace be upon him)? What is more is that in your belief you are devouring part of a God...

Islam seems a very regimented religion to me, the way you guys seem required to interject this sort of stuff all the time.

If her father was alive, that points towards it being in line with the way society worked at the time. I guess that's only a problem if you want to claim Mohammed was anything more than an example of a person of his times.
