The plane get's in at 4:30 - can you meet me at the airport or shall I get a taxi? :) Congratualtions, even though I have no idea what a diploma is in the UK system (your age makes it about the same age as we take our A-Levels here, is it similar?). Remember tomorrow is a Sunday, so despite the slight difference in legislation between our two countries - you should wake up thinking "where did Saturday go?" Wink wink, nudge nudge. ____________________ David Wulff hu·mour Pronunciation Key (hymr) n. & v. Chiefly British Dave's Code Project Screensaver and Wallpaper page.

There seems to be a lot of differences in educational systems around the world. Here we attend Kindergarten at about 5 or 6 years old, then 6 years of elementary school, followed by either 2 years Jr./ 4 years Sr. High School, or 3 years middle/3 years High School, for a total of 13 years. A diploma is issued upon completion of High School. University and college are generally interchangeable terms, though Unis tend to offer more selection. Both are comprised of multiple specialty schools that share a common admin department. Most programs require 4-5 years to complete, resulting in a BA or BS degree. Grad school follows leading to MA/MS degrees and PhDs. What's the path in the UK? "What is it?" and he said, "I don't know. Let's kill it." - Ed Gadziemski

Congratulations! What's next? I am in the US, but I am still 2000 miles away from you so I probably won't make it. Have fun though.

The school systems differ between different countries within the U.K. In Scotland, you attend primary school between five and twelve, then secondary school from 12 to 16. You can choose to stay on for a fifth and sixth year (I believe most people now do), which would take you to eighteen. There isn't a concept of a diploma on leaving school, just certificates for particular subjects. Until quite recently, Universities could offer degrees and colleges could offer diplomas, with Universities being of higher prestige but colleges being more vocational (directly practical). In the last ten years or so, though, these distinctions have been blurred and many former colleges are now universities. A Scottish degree takes four years for honours, though you can graduate with an ordinary degree in three years. Ther are many different possible degrees, but the most common are M.A. and B.Sc. Higher degrees include B.A., M.Sc., and Ph.D. I've never understood the English school system, but people leave English schools with a narrower, more specialised education than in Scotland. Their degree courses are a year shorter as a result. Naturally, there exist strongly held and diametrically opposed opinions as to which is the better system. (But it's the Scottish one :-) ;P) You may have noted that I listed M.A. as a first degree and B.A. as a higher degree. The order of precedence of M.A. and B.A. depends on your university - in some the order is reversed. Gavin Greig

Here a BA/S is the first degree obtained, and the MA/S requires two to three years of more specialized education, along with some strenuous professional-level project or research paper. The A or S designation is Arts or Science, with the sci being the more difficult level and normally requiring more class hours. A PhD, or Doctorate requires even more specialized study on top of the MA/S and requires an original contribution to the field for completion. Sadly, few US citizens pursue a Masters, most having to devote full time to work in order to survive financially. Even fewer pursue a Doctorate, and most work at this level in US Universities is accomplished by foreigners or recent immigrants. That trend is going to cost us dearly in the near future, I think.
