Shell thumbnails
-
I like that feature of explorer where it shows you a thumbnail image of your listed documents (HTML, PDF, etc). Obviously some serious Shell magic going on there. What I would like to know, is there any API which I could tap into which would let me pass it a file and have it return to me the image for display in my own programs?

Actually, that is a good question you raise there. Technically this was a programming question and thus not desirable in the Lounge, but without limiting it to a specific language (which might not be desirable), and without cross-posting (which is definitely not desirable), which forum should it have been asked in?

But it has to go somewhere, so where/how would you have posted it? It's tricky, but I guess I would have posted it in the Lounge myself, and added an appology before the post saying that I couldn't find a suitable forum for it. General Discussions seems the cloest by name, but the description for it specifies it is more for site or developer discussions than questions.

I would not have posted it because the forum says do not post programming questions (use the programming forums for that).
I think you misunderstood my question. It has to be posted/postable somewhere, so where would you have posted it? In other words: which forum?

Well, the question that I'm asking is at what point should a poster feel comfortable telling someone that their post isn't appropriate for the Lounge? I think if I were new, I'd be hesitant to do so. Better to hang around for awhile getting a feel for the place.

Yeah, that's why we're pretty sure Mr. 213 isn't new... ;)

I see. So if I were to respond to it, it'd be like punching a hand-puppet?

I did consider that, but because this wasn't language specific, I decided to post in the lounge... :|

Personally, I understand the need for organization, but the minute there is the slightest question of dought whether it belongs in forum A or forum B, I post wherever I feel like posting. I figured it was generic enough, as I'm looking for an API, not specific to VB, VC, ASP, whatever and also considered that I would likely get the biggest response posting in the lounge and seeing how it's not a common question I kinda wanted to get it noticed. :P I find posting here now, is like walking on egg shells...I get at least one complaint every 5 times I post in the lounge. Haha. Meh..

Well, if you were mean about it. I suppose you could just smile at the puppet, or laugh at the puppet, or put on a goofy face and coo at the puppet... :)
