What size plasma TV?

With all the mid year sales and interest free deals, we've decided that it's high time to upgrade to a plasma TV. Which prompts the question, 42" or 50"? I'm leaning toward 50", after all, bigger is usually better, but we'd be sitting at about 2.7 to 3m away from it, so I'm worried that it might be a bit too big. Is there really such a thing as too big? Cheers, Anthony.
right now, 42" is the most popular and hence the best value...but (except for Panasonic), most 42" screens are EDTV (1366 x 768) and not HDTV (1920 x 1080) Panasonic is releasing a true 42" HDTV this month (TH-42PZ700) [^] as for comparisons between LCD & Plasma see this[^]...a bit dated but still has some good points as for me...I am seriously considering this baby... Big size is good when you watch live matches and horor moviz with big surround sound effects. If you go for big size you can bring more people(or friends) at your home and enjoy watching. If you feel your elec bill is getting high then ask your friends to share your bill:laugh::laugh::laugh:

The 50" one I was looking at uses a max of 460W, which works out to be about $0.35 a day (based on an average of 6 hours a day), which I can live with. As fas as transporting it goes, we bought our first home about a year and a half ago and have no intentions of moving any time soon, so that's not going to be an issue for us. I thought burn-in was pretty much a thing of the past these days?

for the most part, except for the case where you watch standard aspect ratio programs on a widescreen plasma screen, and after about a year you will see that when you watch actual widescreen content, the "black bars" area will be much brighter, so choose the right aspect ratio Roswell

A lot of the 42" screens I've seen have a native resolution of 1024x768, rather than the proper 1366x768. I'm not too worried about full 1080p, they're almost twice the price and, from what I have read, it's not really worth it on a screen up to 50" (of course, that doesn't mean it's true!)

Mortgage is fine (I think we've managed to pay off about $100 of the principle in the last year and a half...), we made sure that we borrowed an amount that wouldn't really hurt too much, even with the last 3 or 4 interest rate rises in the last six months

I just bought a 32" HDTV* and it is ample. We sit about 2.5m away from it and it looks good. Any closer and standard-def content shows its problems and HD content is overwhelming. I had a look at a 40" but it was just too big for the situation. * LCD thoug, not plasma.

I mean my mother has managed to pull a wheelie in our tractor and that had ¾ of a tonne weight on the front but a small topper (flat mower) on the back (weights much less, maybe under ¼ of a tonne).

Generally, so the screen covers 30-40% of your width of vision. I have a 42" plasma and I think either size is good at that distance. Elaine (square eyed fluffy tigress)

Yes there is such a thing as too big. 50 inches at 3m or 9 feet is perfect.

I just bought a 47" LCD last week (http://www.westinghousedigital.com/details.aspx?itemnum=59[^]). I sit about 10' away and don't find it too large - just awesome. More important than size these days is quality. Just about every brand has known issues, regardless of the pricepoint you are looking at. I would suggest reading up on the models you are looking at first. AVS Forums is a good place for this - http://www.avsforum.com/[^].
