I want to put a set of speakers in my home office that will do a reasonable job of playing music. I need background noise to cover the normal house noise. I don't have a super duper sound card, nor do I have high fidelity ears ;). I don't need a sub woofer for games, though if it helps the music... Suggestions?

it will. if you're near a Best Buy or Computer City, stop by there and test the speakers out for yourself. IMO, actually listening to them beats any number of reviews.

And here I'm dreaming of Mackie 824 as my stereo setup for computer (or some other similarly priced setup). I don't know if I should pity you for being satisfied with the sound quality of those BOSE or I should envy you for being satisfied with the sound quality of those BOSE speakers and thus not having to spend 1K in sound equipment (not that I have that much money to spend anyway :( ).

Which means most anything will do then. Go buy what you can afford and it should be fine. I bought these a few years back and they are fine.

I think the issue is that Bose is always overpriced for the level of quality that they offer, not that $1400 is too much or too little for speakers. It's more of comparing it with other speakers in its price range.

Well, to be honestly I'm not impressed by that $200 bose setup. That's just two 2.5" speakers and a subwoofer . The 2.5" speakers will sound tinny with no middle frequencies and subwoofer will oomph but not produce a good bass. I have similar system from Yamaha and while it's fine for movies I would never consider it a decent setup for listening to music. I have Sennheiser HD600 and headphone amp totalling around $600, and to me yes, that setup is totally worth it compared to $50 headphones. They sound absolutely fantastic, depending on the recording you may not only be able to hear guitar, you'll be able to hear the fingers running the strings. So wonderful to hear all those details...

Last december I was looking for inexpensive 2 piece speakers for my sister (doesn't listen to anything with much bass and lives in a dorm). There was very little available for a reasonable price that looking at the specs didn't appear to be just headphones in a bigger enclosure. I don't have a musical ear by any means but I could easily tell the difference between my old entry level ($30???) Cambridge Soundworks 2.1 setup and the $10-20 2.0 multimedia speakers they replaced. More recently I bought a Logitech 5.1 set for $80-100ish. The main difference i noticed was that I could get much louder before noticing the distortion. At levels suitable to be able to carry on a conversation over there was almost difference between the two.

You know, I've got a nice Kenwood system at home, and here at the office I have a set of cheapo Altec speakers with the subwoofer, and I can't tell a lot of difference unless I turn it up way too loud for the office. The Kenwood system is a little more clear on the high end, but it's not much of a difference.
