woo you reminded me to get some more malt etc for my homebrewing thanks Joergen :) I find it highly entertaining that here in Convictland the drinking age is 18 i.e. pubs bars and bottlestores - but there seems to be no problem with a 16 year old buying a home brew kit and making it himself at home :) I don't think any of the locals have cottoned on to this though Bryce

I've also observed that it's nice to have health insurance, which i don't...so i thought i would ask if anyone knew what this was, and then wait a couple days to see if it will go away. As a last resort, perhaps see a doctor if nothing improves Roswell

I have no actual advice here... I just wanted to let you know that I hope it's not an injury. I broke my right wrist a little over a month ago and it's been difficult to do anything involving that hand. I took finals and finished up a gargantuan compiler project for school while in a full arm splint (well, it went from my hand to above my elbow). I just got the full splint off on Tuesday and I'm in a thumb splint now. Typing is easier, but my wrist aches a little bit if I use it too much...so I'm taking it easy. So yeah...hand injuries == no fun. Especially for us computer junkies. Every time I tried to write code in that full splint, I'd get frustrated after the first few lines. I'd get it looked at. I didn't think my wrist was broken the first day it happened. I thought I had just sprained it (I was goofing off with another student at my karate dojo...my wrist rolled...I'll spare you the boring details) until the next morning when I went to pick up a water bottle out of my cup holder on my way to school and I just couldn't put any weight on it. So I went down to the ER, got some x-rays, and found out I had a hairline fracture on my scaphoid bone[^] which, if it wasn't immobilized, could have caused me lifelong problems with my wrist. So yeah, I'm a big proponent of the x-ray. Go get it looked at. ;)

I believe you, it's only computer related activity that's causing you problems. ;P

I just noticed something strange yesterday evening...that when i bend my wrist (down, with the palm of my hand facing down as well), there's a big bulge at the top of my wrist, though it's not visible when my hand and wrist are straight/parallel. Looks like some sort an injury, but it hasn't been painful, so i'm not sure what to make of it. Being a small-boned person (my wrists are exactly 2in across), i may have overloaded it, but i never felt or heard anything pop, so i'm not sure when it's happened, though it may have been yesterday or the day before. This is my right hand, so i can't really avoid using it either. I hope somebody has a clue on what this could be and how serious. Roswell:~

City Mayor, Los Angeles, CAI can't say if the wrist is broken or not, but my suggestion is to get some medical advise. This is probably because we cannot say anything about our body. My mom fell on the ground some ten years back and had no pain during those days but now it is really hard for her. She even couldn't sleep well. It is only a medical person who can best tell you if you need some medical treatment.

Similar thing happened to me a few years ago (just over a decade, golly has it really been that long?) I fell out the back of a moving vehicle and 'sprained' both my wrists. The swelling went down after a few days and everything seemed to be fine, so I drove off to uni thinking not much more of it. Noticed that when putting weight on the wrist from a certain angle there's be a significant amount of pain. So i went to the medical centre, had some XRays done and both my scaphoids were broken! No displacement but enough for 14 weeks or so of casts. Of course the first plaster casts lasted only as until I mowed the lawn, after which there was a large cloud of plaster dust following me and the lawnmower around the garden... Went back and got some fibreglass casts after that, much better! It was shortly before my mid year exams, so I ended up doing the exams with a concession of 25% extra time as it was difficult to write (as well as a lot of other activities which became somewhat more difficult when I could bend neither wrist!)
I have no blog...

City Mayor, Los Angeles, CABetter consult an Ortho Specialist and let it known and get treatment so that it will be safe for you Roswell. Right now if you are feeling pain better take one antibiotic or take a cup of beer and carry on your work.

Firstly - see a doctor. You don't want to have a small tear, strain, or dislocation turn into a debilitating injury. My father developed a large bulge on his wrist that was due to a severe straining of the sack containing the metacarpals (the bones in the palm). The sack is full of some lovely body-produced goo that lubricates the metacarpals, and the bulge formed because of the strain that weakened a portion of it. It looked kinda gross, but was harmless enough. He had minor surgery to repair the sack and everything was fine.

Seems like what your father had may be the case here as well, because i sprained that same wrist three times back around March of this year and every time it healed i ended up overloading again. If i hold my hand and wrist straight and put my finger over where the bulge comes up, when i bend my wrist the pain resonates thoughout the metacarpals area, so i'm pretty sure i'm dealing with the same problem... City Mayor, Los Angeles, CAI have had something identical to what you describe for years. My mother calls it a cyst but it's really an aggregation of fluid. It probably leaks from some part of your wrist where you may have cracked a cartiledge ( I fell over leaving a dance floor 2 inches deep in beer ). Nothing much you or anyone else can do about it except take it easy on your wrist. If you poke it hard enough ( not recommended ) it might well disperse but it will very likely return over time. Of course I could be completely wrong and it could be a tumour or even the first symptom of turning into the elephant man so see a qualified medical bod and they will put your mind at ease :sigh:
Nothing is exactly what it seems but everything with seems can be unpicked.

Now that i've thought about it, it seems to be just that...i forgot to mention that i've sprained that same wrist three times in the row this spring, all within about a months period. So basically as soon as it started to heal, i ended up overloading it again, and it's been very painful to bend my wrist the opposite way or to put weight on my hand during that time and it seems to have hurt in the same area that the i have the bulge in now...makes perfect sense. And after unloading a car full of groceries two or three hours ago it's started to hurt again:sigh: And when i think about it more, i think i've seen the bulge before (maybe six weeks ago) when it was about 1/3 or half the size it is now and mistook it for just being bones that compose the joint. But thanks for helping me put it all together in my mind...i've been under quite a bit of stress lately, so i'm sure if forgot one or two things:-O Roswell:)

City Mayor, Los Angeles, CAHmm. My 'cyst' is completely painless so I'm slightly suspicious. If it doesn't get better I'd definitely consult a quack, for peace of mind if nothing else. Having said that I fell off a ladder a few weeks ago and did something crunchy to my left arm. Despite Xray and examination the hospital could find nothing wrong with it. I still can't lean on my desk with it without clicking sensations, a loss of feeling in my little finger and pain in my forearm :( I guess it will either get better or it won't. :)

The "cyst" is painless unless i press on it very hard, but what hurts is the wrist itself, because i've overloaded it again yesterday evening...so i guess i'll have to buy some of that stretchy bandage stuff and that would probably help, along with letting it heal this time:) I hope your arm will get better soon, because pinched nerves are never a good thing...if i overload my back sometimes, something shifts and i lose feeling in part of my left leg so i always have to remember to be careful about that....
