Well the news is in....

Yesterday the gauntlet fell, let me start by saying I have an Ileostomy from a genetic (very rare) that causes colon cancer so at the age of 19 they had to remove most of my digestive tract. Fast forward 20 years, yesterday it was confirmed that the condition is back, and on 02JUL07 they will once again (for the 4th or 5th time, I forget its been so many)opening me up and removing a small section of my small intestines and re sectioning my Ileostomy, and possibly moving it to the other side of my abdomen. If they have to move it then that will be the icing on the cake, Ill get to spend the next several years adjusting many life habits to account for the new location X|. What truly sucks about this is I will be in the hospital 3-5 days, then 4-7 weeks of recovery time....4-7 weeks away from my programming??!! I'll go nuts if I cant program for that long. Fortunately after about 2 weeks my doctor says he will *think* about allowing me to work some from home. The silver lining in all this is they took a collection at work and were able to get 27 days of vacation time donated to my account (where I work you can actually do that) so at least for the first 27 days I"ll get paid, then after that I'll have to convince my surgeon to let me work from home. So, hows everyone else's day going? :->

That sound weird to me. Do you mean where you live workers don't get paid when they are sick? Where the hell is that place? :~

That seems weird to me also. I don't like taking sick days, but I know that if I am sick and can't work I don't have the additional worry about how to pay my mortgage at the end of the month. I think that additional stress would make people worse not better.

Yeah, but this has been going on sice 09MAR and I have used up all but 2 days vacation and 4 hours sick time. I have missed a total of 7 weeks so far this month with this (not to mention this will be the 2nd surgery this year).

Well I have short term disability through work but that don't kick in until Ive been out 4 weeks or so (though they do make it retro), other than that I don't know of anyone who gets paid for not working, well except the government

that sucks. IIRC my short term disability kicks in immediately if I'm hospitalized, otoh it's only 66% of my normal salary.

First of all best of luck, I just spent 3 weeks in hospital and it was bad enough, but this was in "isolation". Also had high-dose chemotherapy which one of the side-effects is lack of concentation so I was bored senseless because I couldn't keep my mind on anything. You mean to say you're not allowed to take a laptop or computer in if you're going to be there for so long? When I asked I was allowed to take my desktop plus the new 22" screen I got for it, but then again I did have my own room but on the whole it didn't take up that much room, maybe 30x20" maximum. Great co-workers though.

It is not your fault that you cannot work, so why should you be punished? I can be sick for up to 5 weeks and still get my salary. After 5 weeks my insurance takes over. They pay less, but still enough to survive. I know a guy who could not work for several months. After 5 weeks he tried working for about one week, that started a new timespan so he got full salary again. Usually being sick is not a financial problem.

Vacation is vacation and hospital is hospital. Let me tell you one thing: When I'm on vacation and become ill, my lost vacation days get turned into sickness days. That means, I can take the vacation again when I'm healthy. That is not a special condition at my company - where I live, it is a law. It does not matter how many days you are gone because of some illness or accident, it does not touch your number of vacation days. In other words: being sick is bad enough, nobody should have additional disadvantages. You might find it strange that a state forces companies to pay employees for lying in hospital. Well, I find it strange to make ill people pay for medication while they don't have any income.
