When we moved we bought our appliances at a regional chain store. I had great customer service at the shop in my previous location. A long time ago we were to have our dishwasher installed on a Saturday morning "first thing." 11am rolls around and I call them. They say that we called and cancelled to have it delivered next week. Uh, no. Please deliver now. I kept calling and getting the 'he's on his way' excuse but he didn't arrive until 3pm. So half my Saturday was wasted. I called this week to have someone look at my washer and dryer I bought last year because we keep finding small holes in our clothes and we can't figure out what is causing the holes. Made the appointment for 10am today. 11am I call home and the hubby says they haven't called or showed up. Call the store. Guess what? They claim we called and cancelled saying we called someone else to look at the washer/dryer! First, why would I pay someone else when they are under warranty? Secondly, this is the second blatant LIE. Then all of a sudden they could magically appear right now. Since my hubby has to go to work I rescheduled for Monday 'first thing.' I am going to talk to the store manager and if they don't show up Monday morning I am writing the company president. Anyone else had customer service lie to you like this?

Don't talk to the manager on the phone. It would be best to talk face to face.

Before you go to talk with the store manager, have the company president's phone number and be ready to call him will standing in the store manager's office. Squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Yeah, typically it's building contractors that do it. We bought a Jacuzzi brand hot tub when we bought our new house in 2005. At the time they were on sale and the store we bought it at swore up and down and sideways and very convincingly that they were the best there was and "hassle free". Before that we had a hot tub at the house we rented, another brand, and it was a hassle all the time so we were very happy to hear that. After we bought it there were lot's of little problems, parts falling off, a leak at one point, the filter things disintegrating etc etc. All fixed under warranty. Latest problem is that the filter cover clips weakened and snapped off so we went back to the shop yesterday to find out if they can just be replaced and surprise suprise there wasn't a single Jacuzzi brand hot tub in the store, all 30 or so of the display models were replaced with some other brand entirely! We talked to the service guy and he admitted they had a lot of problems with the Jacuzzi ones. I've come to learn in life that whenever you buy anything important it's always best to talk to the service people first. We've got the best lawnmower and string trimmer ever that run flawlessly and work very well because we had bought so many lawnmowers and other equipment at Home Depot and other department stores (expensive ones) and when they inevitably broke and we took them to a place for service the service company slowly and very helpfully explained clearly why any power equipment you buy from a big chain store is utter crap. Complete with technical explanations etc. They showed us how our one year old string trimmer actually had a engine that was half plastic with a cheap valve that is not designed to last more than a year. Then showed us the one they sell which is all metal and has the right kind of valve etc. Power equipment repair shops usually sell their own line of equipment, much of the the same brand names you would find in those big stores, but inside the guts of it are completely different, much higher quality. And it's turned out to be completely true.

I have a HomeLite weed eater from Home Depot that is just like you described; utter crap. The air/gas mixture 'screws' are all plastic, and have worn, making adjustment to the engine impossible. So unless I'm squeezing the trigger, it won't start and stay running; I have to "manually" keep the engine "idle". The stupid "auto feed" for the line, never works; and I constantly have to open it up, pull out the cord, close it back up...etc ...etc ... it might work for a time, then the plastic "knob" gets stuck, and the line won't 'eject'... Most recently, the start cord broke, in half; I've only had this thing for about 1½ years. The cord was this cheap nylon stuff, and was bound to break sooner, rather than later. I've yet to be able to figure out how the plastic casing comes off this thing, despite the fact that I've removed all the "apparent" screws from the housing ... something tells me, when I do get the case off, there's going to be a host of plastic clips, springs and whatnot that come flying off, making re-assembly all but impossible. It all bites the big weed.

We bought an Echo[^] brand trimmer from the repair place. It's incredible, starts with barely any pull and has a completely innovative string mechanism, basically it's a one way hole that you push a 8 inch piece of trimmer string into from the outside. The string can only go in, it can never go out and there is no repository for string in the head, you just carry a few chunks in your back pocket, if they break you slide another one in, easy as pie. The best part though is that this mechanism takes unbelievably big string, gotta be a quarter inch in diameter, and it just doesn't break, or you can put in tiny string, it accepts any size. The repair guy claimed it won't break down and he says all the industrial guys use these trimmers like the city public works dept., Highways guys etc etc. I think the trick though is to not buy them at Home Depot or any big chain stores because like just about all the products carried at those stores you get a special cheapo model. Best to buy it from a dealer dedicated to that stuff. I can't speak to it's longevity we've only had it a few weeks but we have 3 acres and a lot of trimming to do and it's worked very well so far. It was about 50 bucks more expensive than the "top of the line" one we bought at Home Depot a few years back that didn't even last the first year without having to go to the repair shop and now has a completely fubared trimmer tap and release head thingie. We only keep it around because we bought the ninja blade attachment for it so we use that on Scotch Broom and small bushes. For just a few more bucks you can get far better equipment at specialty dealer stores. Same thing happened when we bought a kitchen faucet. We bought a top of the line one with a good name from Home Depot, it's finish was all damaged when we took it out of the box and it looked like cheap parts. I took it back and could only find another one at a specialty plumbing supply place. It was a *lot* more expensive, same brand, looked similar but was obviously much heavier and made out of really solid parts. The guy explained that most companies make a knock off cheapo imitation of their good products (outsource to another manufacturer) for Home Depot and the chain stores and only sell their own stuff that's top quality directly through plumbing supply and specialty dealers.
