Whats the deal with people beginning sentences with the word "So". I hear people being interviewed on television programs who, throughout the entire interview, reply to each question with "So, ". Its sounds absurd.

So, I was sitting in my living room when the whole house shook around 12:45PM (Southern California)...and I thought Earthquake!...but it was just a quickie...afterwards I realized it was the sonic boom of the Space Shuttle coming in for a landing [^] :whew:  Steve

I too have noticed this trend. It's in all the Microsoft Channel 9 videos. It seems to be a Silicon Valley thing.

I noticed that bad habit in the videos too. I suppose it might a S.V. thing. I dont live there and never have visited there - but the videos, those I've seen and man is that annoying! Guess that strikes out a bunch of folks looking at jobs which request "good written and verbal communications skills". Imagine interviewing someone and there every reply begins with "So, " ? Holy cow. No way. Sounds very flaky.

It's called a placeholder. Many words function this way, especially in speech. Generally, people do it to give themselves time to think. Interestingly, all languages do this.

I remember back when the shuttle always landed at Edwards, we'd get those booms several times a year. One time, I was outdoors since I had PE class at the time, and when you're outside those things are LOUD.
