Anti-Virus software question....

Norton had good AV software, but a few years ago, it started going downhill...especially last year...the auto update stopped working and it was necessary to uninstall and then reinstall the software to kick start the update and even that eventually failed to work. I hoped that Norton 2007 would correct the problem, but it didn't...and the uninstall process left several components installed and running...I had to go to the Norton site and use a special uninstall program that they provided...even that left remnants...I finally had to manually uninstall the last components using another procedure that was difficult to find on the Norton site... X| AVG is my new best friend :cool: Steve

What will happen if a person runs 2 anti-virus software programs at once? I'm wanting to try out the AVG application but dont want to uninstall Norton until I know AVG will dow hat I need it to do, so is this possible or will one of them "freak out" because the other is running?:confused:

I don't there would be any undue interference between the two. But it would be an excess pressure and load on the system with every realtime operation being scanned by double applications. Similarly a single Personal Firewall should suffice instead of having two.

yeah, Norton will panic. I've been using AVG for at least three years and it's always done its job. If you still don't trust it, run a software firewall at the same time until you decide it's good. And regarding uninstalling Norton, you'll need to go to their site for a special uninstaller, because Windows can not remove Norton on its own. Roswell

The scanning updates are also relatively slower than that of Grisoft AVG. Isn't it?

Running Norton+AVG probably won't make your computer run any slower than just running Norton - Norton's become a complete resource pig. It used to be reasonable, but now I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Use AVG - it does the job, unobtrusively and with little fuss'n'muss.

google for "the name-version of your AV" + "uninstaller" (i.e. Norton Internet Security 7 uninstaller), and click on the right result for something on the symantec site...that's what i remember doing for a client Roswell

The Symantec antivirus cannot be uninstalled. They have somehow determined how to create a hardware virus which once installed in your machine will exist forever until nuclear annhilation.

At the risk of being considered a me-too post, I can also recommend AVG. Hell - remember when the word "Norton" was synomous with great software? Norton Commander, The Norton Utilities, UNERASE, SPEEDISK, NCACHE... :( Peace!

These folk run some interesting tests of AV products - the results make interesting reading. http://www.av-comparatives.org/[^] The fact mentioned on one post that AVG found some infections 'missed' by Norton may also possibly be linked to its high false positive rate. My recent personal experience, after Norton live update demolished three of my PCs, I moved to Kaspersky on my notebook and immediately reclaimed 100Mb of RAM! Norton took out my notebook, the next day my main PC, so I dashed in to turn off live update on my wife's PC, but, alas too late. My IBM thinkpad crashed to such an extent that I decided to press the magic button and restore to factory settings. installing Norton was OK until I ran live update - again disaster! It turned out that Live Update had updated two dlls in the windows system directory (MSVCP71.DLL and MSVCR71.DLL) but had set the permissions so that normal users had no access rights! So every app developed with VS2003 would fail. I saw this happen on the notebook. What I don't understand is why more people were not affected - I have found a few on some forums, but not many. It did the same thing to the 3 PCs of mine with Norton installed.
