While I do enjoy power metal, Manowar is not my band of choice. Here's[^] a band that puts the word "awesome" into shame... :) \m/

Dragonforce are cool - I have a five foot tall tour poster on my wall, although I didn't go to see them. However, I find their music a little too full on, in the sense that it never breathes. I don't often listen to them, but I do respect what they do. I do prefer their attitude to Manowar, those guys have no sense of humour at all. Do you like Trivium ? That's a modern band I love. Edguy is even better, they are about due for a new album.

Hehe, they're not here to be humorous. They're here to be loud!!! ;) Never heard of Trivium, but a quick look and listen at youtube, revealed something very Metallica-like with power metalish influences. I think I could listen to it for an extended period of time. :) Edguy sounds ok. Their sound is a bit "small" to fit the genre of power metal. If I had to choose between Edguy and Gamma Ray, I'd go with Gamma Ray. :)

Yeah, prior to the last album, they were doing trendy, gutteral vocals. Now that he sings, he sounds a lot like James when he knew what metal is. That's the main reason for that comparison, IMO, but I'm comfortable with saying that Trivium sound like Metallica would, if they didn't suck now. Megadeth's new album is amazing, too. More than anyone, Dave Mustaine is the one who shows why James should be ashamed of himself.

Yeah, I wouldn't say Edguy was power metal. If anything, I'd say they are trying to be Iron Maiden. I do like them a lot. I have a couple of Gamma Ray CDs and 2 live DVDs, but I've never really had time to give them a proper listen. I will do that today, based on your recommendation. I know that Gamma Ray came out of Helloween. I have four or five Helloween CDs, but I never was overjoyed with the Keeper CDs, although I love 'I want out'.

Which albums are they? My absolute favorites are Somewhere Out in Space (1997) and Powerplant (1999). Their first album Heading For Tomorrow (1990) is also a very good album. I have not listened much to their other albums, so I can't really form an opinion about them.

You will notice some similarities, but all in all, Gamma Ray is the better band IMO. I suppose you've listened, or is about to listen to Blind Guardian then? I have not listened to them much, but from the little I've heard lately, they make good music. I'm currently in a metal phase... I'm listening to everything I can find! :-D

I have one CD, I was wrong. I was thinking of Fates Warning. The one I have is heading for tomorrow, I bought it for $4 at a second hand store, with a bunch of CDs, and, as happens when I do that, some of them were never fully investigated.

I bought their live DVD, and ended up selling it ( I also sold a Manowar DVD, which I now regret ). It seemed a bit pedestrian to me, it was live, and had no spark, at least, that's how it seemed to me. They are one band I suspect I may get into at some point, but, like Stradovarius, my first attempt did not impress. Yeah, this sounds great ( Gamma Ray, track 1 )

Just to reiterate: buy the new Megadeth ( United Abominations ). Then new Saxon and Ozzy are OK, but Megadeth is supreme. If you can live with gutteral vocals, the new Machine Head is also pretty special. And if you like the Bon Jovi ( circa Slippery When Wet ) end of the sale, the new Gotthard is also pretty cool.

Anyone else here into Manowar ? I got 'Kings of metal' on CD yesterday. My favourite lyrics include: 'The metal people want to rock, not pose. Wearing jeans and leather, not crackerjack clothes' 'We don't attract wimps, coz we're too loud, just true metal people, that's manowars crowd' 'On crusade, the world we bring, four kings of metal, four metal kings, death to the false ones, dance on a string, 'til the blood on your sword is the blood of a king' it goes on and on. It's so cheesy, so terrible, yet, somehow, it just makes it more awesome.

I *think* they appear on a sampler CD I got with Metal Hammer, but I've not got into them, no.

I live and breathe Megadeth. Thrash metal FTW! (Although, Megadeth feels less thrashy these days. Gone are the days of Hangar 18 and Symphony of Destruction :sigh:)

Heard of them - recorded at least one track of theirs off Tommy Vance's Friday Rock Show[^]. They seemed to be not too far away (in attitude) from Venom[^]. My guilty/cheesy secret band is Agent Steel[^] - a speed metal band with a helium voiced singer. Splendid!

That's a great album. I have it on vinyl. I haven't heard it for ages Nowadays I listen most of the time to dutch (mainstream-)radio, or to last.fm[^] on the internet when I feel like metal André Laan
