...and mosquitoes... Yup, in about a week i'll be leaving for La Crosse, Wisconsin and the beautiful banks of the upper Mississippi. Initially planned as a quick weekend trip to attend the wedding of one of my cousins, it's ballooned into a two-week attempt to convince my co-workers that i'm not just a disembodied voice, meet with the people i'm supposed to be writing software to support, visit with family, and enjoy as much of the local beverage as i can comfortably imbibe. I haven't been back during the summer time in almost three years, so it'll also be a great chance to reacquaint myself with real humidity, and maybe comfort myself with a nice cold slice of rhubarb pie. The best part though? A hotel room within walking distance of my all-time favorite pub.

Yes, but can you blame them for doing so if that's the only legal way they can hire programmers they want at the rate they can afford?

Hope there are strawberries in that pie as well as the rhubarb. Just rhubarb would be a tad tart. ;) <distant gaze> My grandma made the best strawberry/rhubarb pie. </distant gaze> Judy

I moved to CA from Madison a couple of years ago. I still miss the Capital seasonal (the darker the better for me)... I love Southwest WI. You've probably been there, but just south of Prairie du Chien is Wyalusing State Park -- where the Wisconsin and Mississippi rivers meet -- one of my favorites. Have fun!!

I do love a good strawberry+rhubarb pie... but the one i'm thinking of is more of a rhubarb custard in a pie-shell, with meringue on top. With good, ripe rhubarb and just enough sugar (too many people try to compensate for the tartness by adding ridiculous amounts... should be just a little, for contrast)... ah, it's fantastic stuff.

If I'd known you like rhubarb I would have baked a pie when you were here. It's my favorite pie, and once in a great while the stores here have a few stalks. Yummmmm....:-D

Yup, same here. It actually grows quite well on the east side of the river, but I no longer know anyone there with plants... Which is a shame, 'cause the flavor seems to vary a lot with how much sun it gets, and the last stuff i found in the supermarket was pretty sad.

Sure won't! I already plan on stopping by the creamery on my way to the wedding... to snack on the way, ya know? ;)
