Go Daddy just shutdown my domain
-
I listened to a web designer and let them set up my domin using Go Daddy years ago. They are long since gone and now my domain is expired and Go Daddy won't renew unless I tell them my pass code or the credit card number used to purchase the account. Never Never Never use Go Daddy they suck.

They won't use my address, name or anything else it has to be a pass code or the credit card number used to set it up 4 years ago. But you are right I would have been better off using discountasp or someone that I have a working relationship with.
- They're protecting you from being the victim of domain hijacking. 2) If you don't have a backup of the files, who's fault is that? GoDaddy?

I have to agree with what others have said. If GoDaddy released domain information on a whim I would not be using them as I have for years now.

I've used Go Daddy for years now and have yet to have any kind of problem with them, in fact they're the only one's I'll use for my domains (and I have 6 of them)

You are screwed. Never Never Never allow someone else to register a domain name you will rely on. The registrar's contract is with the person who registered it, not the person that party is registering it for. I regularly register domain names for clients and I ensure that each gets a separate account and each is sent the account details should they need them in the future. That said, there may be channels you can go through to recover the domain. If you genuinely can't find the web designer anymore because they have gone out of business then find evidence of that and that you own the site it points to and see if speaking to Go Daddy helps. Maybe they could let you extend it but not change any details? Your situation can't be that uncommon. Maybe you could use the anti-hijacking rules in your favour to get Go Daddy to transfer it to you? I don't know... :~

Why didn't you set up the domain yourself? You probably are going to end up having to create a new domain similar to the one that expired...

Why do you want to renew? Let it expire or get one of those requests pending on cancellation deals and the domain probably won't be down for more then a few hours these days.

NEVER, EVER allow the web host or a third party to register your domain. That is putting all your eggs in one basket. e.g. use Network Solutions to register and keep the domains then point trhem to the web host. That way if the web host goes under you can swiftly move to a new one. On the other hand YOU retain control of your domain registrations.
