...from my 80 GB hard drive. Finally got it working and Ghost managed to move everything across from my old drive. Actually 80 GB is a bit of a stretch and the consistency between the different parts of the system impresses me no end. BIOS - 80020 MB FDISK - 76317 MB Windows 2000 - 74.53 GB (pretty much the same as FDISK) I mean I have lost 5.47 GB from the manufacturer's claim, my old disk was only 4 and a bit GB as it was. I have lost more usuable space than I had before. The other thing is cost compared to a few years ago. I paid AUD $235.00 for a Seagate Barracuda 80 GB ATA100 7200 RPM on the weekend. Back in 1993 I purchased a 540 MB HDD that required a utility to be loaded so that my 486 could read past the 1024th cylinder. I shopped around for ages and eventually went to a dodgy Asian store that couldn't have been charging sales tax and still it cost me AUD$300.00 (about $60.00 less than every other store around). The final whinge is about the jumpers that manufacturer's place on HDD. I know that they have to make good contact to work, but I needed to use a pair of small pliers to get the jumper off my new HDD. :wtf: Michael Martin Australia mjm68@tpg.com.au "In Summer, I like to dance naked on the roof to celebrate the event of the temperature finally falling below 40C (usually about midnight). I've partitioned it off into managable chunks. Which allows me to have Win2k, Win2k Server, WinXP and Linux all on the same machine :-D Also there is room for my copious amounts of downloaded libaries and apps Plus all the CP code demos and sources :-D Then there is all my assignments X| And last but not least, my movies ripped from my own DVD's as backups :~

I finally got myself some casual work pulling down, moving and then putting back up, shelves, pallet racks and other stuff at a warehouse for the past couple of weeks. After paying for living expenses I went out and bought the HDD as the 4 GB and 3 GB I had were overflowing once I had Office, VC++, MSDN and the SDK installed plus a few other shareware and freeware bits and pieces. 80 GB was overkill but the store had run out of 60 GB HDD. Also with costs being - 20 GB - $135.00 40 GB - $165.00 60 GB - $200.00 80 GB - $235.00 It was hardly worth getting the smaller disks. I doubt I will have anything to go close to filling it but better to have too much than not enough. Anyway I better get to bed. 5 hours before I have to get up for another 8 hours of manual labour. um....libraries are mostly add-ins like the JPEG library and WTL. Apps with source are stuff like Mozilla which unpacks to be huge  Other stuff includes eval editions of server apps like the Mobile Information Server which i'm installing now. Also there are the various SDKs and Platforms. I just checked my 'Download' directory and its nearly 3gig. When i sort it out they will go into my filling system on the server called 'Jonny's Stuff'. At the moment this is around 3 gig too. Any music goes into the 'Music Server' (4gig!!) directory where it is separated by artist. Movies have there own partition of 17gig, of which 14 is used :wtf: Anything else goes into the 'Files' partition until i find somewhere to put them! :-D "When I'm not awake i'm usually sleeping" - Jonny Newman + C2H5OH

My friend happened across one that was basically a *nix library for VS. It allowed him to develope for *nix using the VS IDE [which is way better that anything I'm come across on *nix]... he couldn't execute the code directly but there was an add in that allowed you to specify the machine you were developing for and give a username and password and VS would then compile the code and run it on the remote machine... but he lost it... ass!!! That would be so handy for me!!!

Nice not to have to worry about free space ain't it :) I finally broke down & bought a 120GB drive a while back; coupled with my 40GB removeable it should keep me satisfied for a while... --------

I'm also working on the new star trek series (Enterprise). I have about 21 of the 26 episodes so far. I don't download movies because the quality is usually pretty much crap. I don't like watching a video of someone taking a video in the theater. Like it or not, I'm right.

I think HD manufacturers purposefully use the wrong calculation for their storage capacity. 1 mb (1048576 bytes) X 1000 = 1 gb (1048576000 bytes) So 80 gb = 83886080000 bytes When windows calculates it, it uses 1 mb (1048576 bytes) X 1024 = 1 gb (1073741824 bytes) So 80 gb to windows = 85899345920 bytes I don't know why they calculate it this way, but what can you do. Like it or not, I'm right.

I think that they don't do this mistake. Actually if you install another OS on your drive you'll probably see that you have more (or sometimes less :(( ) free space. That's because any filesystem needs information to work and stores it a part of the hard drive, making it invisible and unusable for the user... (and windows one is very hungry... I think you're missing the point. :-) It's not the size of free space he's measuring, it's the actual size of the disk. And yes, hard disk manufacturers do this type of thing intentionally - it's a sales thing. :-( :) Kris :)

For example, fropm http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/discsales/marketing/detail/0,1081,550,00.html: "Capacity: Capacity is the amount of data that the drive can store, after formatting. Most disc drive companies, including Seagate, calculate disc capacity based on the assumption that 1 megabyte = 1000 kilobytes and 1 gigabyte=1000 megabytes."
