...from my 80 GB hard drive. Finally got it working and Ghost managed to move everything across from my old drive. Actually 80 GB is a bit of a stretch and the consistency between the different parts of the system impresses me no end. BIOS - 80020 MB FDISK - 76317 MB Windows 2000 - 74.53 GB (pretty much the same as FDISK) I mean I have lost 5.47 GB from the manufacturer's claim, my old disk was only 4 and a bit GB as it was. I have lost more usuable space than I had before. The other thing is cost compared to a few years ago. I paid AUD $235.00 for a Seagate Barracuda 80 GB ATA100 7200 RPM on the weekend. Back in 1993 I purchased a 540 MB HDD that required a utility to be loaded so that my 486 could read past the 1024th cylinder. I shopped around for ages and eventually went to a dodgy Asian store that couldn't have been charging sales tax and still it cost me AUD$300.00 (about $60.00 less than every other store around). The final whinge is about the jumpers that manufacturer's place on HDD. Nice not to have to worry about free space ain't it :) I finally broke down & bought a 120GB drive a while back; coupled with my 40GB removeable it should keep me satisfied for a while... --------

I'm also working on the new star trek series (Enterprise). I have about 21 of the 26 episodes so far. I don't download movies because the quality is usually pretty much crap. I don't like watching a video of someone taking a video in the theater. Like it or not, I'm right.

I think HD manufacturers purposefully use the wrong calculation for their storage capacity. 1 mb (1048576 bytes) X 1000 = 1 gb (1048576000 bytes) So 80 gb = 83886080000 bytes When windows calculates it, it uses 1 mb (1048576 bytes) X 1024 = 1 gb (1073741824 bytes) So 80 gb to windows = 85899345920 bytes I don't know why they calculate it this way, but what can you do. Like it or not, I'm right.
I think that they don't do this mistake. Actually if you install another OS on your drive you'll probably see that you have more (or sometimes less :(( ) free space. That's because any filesystem needs information to work and stores it a part of the hard drive, making it invisible and unusable for the user... (and windows one is very hungry... I have every episode of star trek TNG but they are all on CDs since I only have a 20 gig HD. :( Like it or not, I'm right.
How big are they... each episode that is??? Ya don't feel like putting them on a server for me, do ya??? I could leave my college computer download them over nite... :-)

I think you're missing the point. :-) It's not the size of free space he's measuring, it's the actual size of the disk. And yes, hard disk manufacturers do this type of thing intentionally - it's a sales thing. :-( :) Kris :)
Of course I wanted to say available space not free space, sorry... (I meant real size after format) But I thought it depended on the OS because the total size of my hard drive was bigger(about 1 gig difference for a 40 gigs one, if I remember well) with Linux on it than with WinXP (or Win98). And I remember that filesystems don't need the same amount of data to work. So that's why I was quite disapointed when I saw how the manufacturers took profits of our trust... :( If I'm wrong somewhere, please explain me so I won't post stupid thread again... ;) .:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:..:.:.:.:.:.:.:.:..:.:. I'd say they are 100+mb on average. Some are 50 while others are over 200 mb. There are 177 episodes, so it would be a huge pain in the butt to copy them to a server. Besides, you can download Kazaa and search for star trek videos. If there are a few you can't find, I could probably manage copying them. Like it or not, I'm right.

I'd say they are 100+mb on average. Some are 50 while others are over 200 mb. There are 177 episodes, so it would be a huge pain in the butt to copy them to a server. Besides, you can download Kazaa and search for star trek videos. If there are a few you can't find, I could probably manage copying them. Like it or not, I'm right.
