My modem died a traggic death during a recent thunderstorm ...

Does that happen to some of you too? Actually the modem wasn't been used at the time (the computer was on). The thunder also destroyed my phone, but the phone line was ok. The funny thing is, my answer machine had 88 messages after the thunderstorm (from GOD?), all of them are just some kind of noise. Now, I am left modemless at home.

I work in tech support. I've actually dealt with 4 such problems today.. It's never happened to me but it's happened to 2 of my friends before. It's a pain in the ass. You could just buy a surge protector for your telephone socket. They're not that dear. :-) P.S. Don't worry about the modem. It's gone to Modem Heaven

Two US-Robotics modems in the old times when modems were very expensive. São Paulo has lots of thunderstorms in the summer. Now I have ADSL and never lost or heard about losing an ADSL modem. It seems to be stronger   Crivo Automated Credit Assessment

If it was a 56K I don't think they are to expensive these days. Black Cat wrote: Actually the modem wasn't been used at the time (the computer was on). This makes no difference if your modem or pc was on or off, only that your phone line was connected to your modem. If lightning strikes close enough to a phone line connected to your phone line (it could have struck several miles down your street) that a high voltage passes through the modem it will most likely destroy it. A surge strip with telephone connection would help and they have a guarantee if they fail the manufacturer (of the surge strip) will sometimes replace your defective product. John

Brian, since you are a tech support person. May I ask a stupid question? How do I replace the modem myself? Do I need to take the damaged one out (and bury it)? ;) It is an internal modem that comes with my computer. Ok, I admit that I probably asked more than one stupid question. ;)
