Microsoft will get your "Internet protocol address, the type of operating system, browser and name and version of the software you are using, and the language code of the device where you installed the software." But all they really need is your IP address. All of this stuff is sent in standard HTTP headers isn't it? But it doesn't matter, because "all they really need is your IP address". While the quote is technically true, it is basically nothing more than scaremongering by an idiot.

If someone wanted to know what I was doing, they wouldn't need to install back doors, spyware or anything like that ... they just need to come here. CP is kinda like the Hotel California ... :-D

Why doesn't Microsoft software do what we want? How dare Microsoft find out what we want (or actually do)! (Replace Microsoft with any other software company.)

Blah, blah & blah. I really couldn't care less if Microsoft is able to identify me or not - I have nothing to hide. Why on earth would they care about me? I don't do anything out of the ordinary, all my software is legal & I don't see much point in porn. This whole privacy thing has gotten almost as bad as political correctness.

That was exactly what I thought as well. For example, when I post this message my IP number, browser version and a bunch of other stuff is readily available for Code Project to read. It is only a matter of accessing the right variable in the script that reads my input, it is no more difficult that reading the words that I am typing in right now.

Easier than reading. It's pretty simple to do a reverse lookup and get your general location based on IP. How many people have noticed that some banner advertising on websites is sending you more localized content? They are doing it by tracking your IP address, primarily. Big brother may not be watching you, but big money sure is...

Not necessarily. Browsers can spoof what they are, what OS they're coming from etc... What MS is doing is nefarious because they are forcing you to identify yourself to them. So you are not anonymous, even if you use the anonymous surfing sites on the internet. As for the person who said he had nothing to hide. That's fine for him, but for others who want the freedom to do this, then they should be able to do this. Now, granted buried in the EULA MS IS saying they will access your computer and pull any data they feel is necessary. So caveat emptor because these days you need to have the time to read through the 100 page EULA for products, otherwise don't use them. I wonder if Apple has the same EULA but hasn't had the same scrutiny? Anyone? They will always have your ISP IP so they know the node you came from at any time. However this can be obscured with an anonymity internet server that does essentially NAT for you. Feds don't like those servers though. The question you have to ask is not why are they doing this, it is why do they need so much information about you in order to keep down piracy and DRM enforcement? Why the collection of so much info? My answer is because they are trying to become a search engine (currently failing miserably at it). So what if they could harvest all of the search criteria you use and the types of data you end up storing on your computer. How about what you print to the printer? Then they might be able to give you much more precise search data. Also the next big thing is image searching and blocking. If they were able to take your images and the names you give those images, send them to MS and process the data, they might have an image recognition algorithm that would actually work.
