As far as I know (I don't have one, but a friend of mine does), D40 is way a good camera. If you have decent optics. The bundled one is not excellent, I hear.

I think it is worth paying more to get D40x. It is a new camera and they fixed some minor issues and it has slightly faster continuous shooting. The megapixel difference (D40x has 10.2) is not that important. Nikon took the D40 and replaced the CCD with a 10.2 megapixel CCD (with a lower base sensitivity of ISO 100). They are also using the same image processing engine found in the D80/D200. In US D40x with the kit lens price is $700. In Costco they were selling D40x with 2 lens(18-55 and 50-200) for $979. I am also looking to buy an 'entry level' digital SLR. So far I have shortlisted 3 cameras Nikon D40x Canon XTi Pentax K100D or the K100D Super. The problem with the Nikon is there is no focus motor in the body so many of the good non-AF-S/AF-I lenses will not auto focus. Canon XTi has focus motor, but the camera feels more 'plastic'(through it is okay). Pentax seems to be okay, but I am now leaning towards Canon XTi. -Madhu.

To me, that is a reason to go with the D80. I haven't purchased it, but a D80 kit with 2 lenses is around $1200 US. I have tested both the D40x and the D80 and much prefer the D80. The usability with some of the controls is also a bit better.

My budget is $1000(maximum). Though I like D80 very much, I am not going for it. Another thing is I like the images from Canon than the ones from Nikon( its a personal preference nothing to do with the quality of the camera :)). Madhu.

i have a Nikon D100 (and an N80, which i used for years before going digital) and i've never had the urge to use any non AF lenses - there are more than enough AF lenses out there, for what i like to shoot (i realize your situation might be different). my D100's feeling a little old these days, but still, instead of buying a D80, i'm going to spend the cash on a nice long VR lens. i figure the VR on a 300mm lens will do more for my shots than anything the D80 has to offer.

If you look around you can probably find a D80 kit for around that price, but you have to go with the camera that you feel comfortable with for image quality. I got hooked on the Nikon's years ago when I borrowed a friends CoolPix. Canon also has good image quality, but from what I remember they are a little slower than the Nikon on picture speed.

Get the D40. You'd paying 25% more for the D40x which is a lot to pay for just an extra .5 fps in continuous shooting and 4 more megapixels. The D40's 2.5fps and 6MP are ample. Remember to compare the square roots of megapixel count if you ever get megapixel envy. Now if the D40x truly doubled the resolution to ~25MP it might be a little more interesting, but you'd need to spend a fortune on storage...
