If you're buying overpriced deigner laptops with InSAnE levels of technology then go for Sony, unless you need practical stuff like a battery life longer than 20 mins in which case Compaq or Toshiba. I'm not jealous at all by the way

Nothing is exactly what it seems but everything with seems can be unpicked.

Need better requirements. For pure development, the extra horsepower of a 17/20" model would be better. Since you're looking at a 13" model though I suspect mobility is a much higher concern than raw horsepower though. What kind of devwork are you doing, how long do you intend to keep this as a primary machine, and how much are you willing to spend?

BTW, This question was asked this week and that time it got more responses. As for my laptop experience. I recently had my company purchase me a new laptop to replace one I had given up for a project demo. The laptop I picked was a Dell D820 running windows XP. When I bought the laptop early this year I was hoping that I could use this to program in windows when I was at home (being that I run 100% linux at home). After trying it out I was highly unimpressed and disappointed that I did not get a faster model with a better display. I simply can not program on my D820 with 17in display, 2GB memory, 7200 rpm hard drive and 1.86GHz core2 processor. The keyboard is annoying to type on. The display is the wrong direction for coding and the cpu (and/or IO) is significantly slower (at least at compiling) than my 2.2Ghz single core Opteron desktop (at work) with 2GB of memory and 7200RPM sata drive.

I work for a small city doing desktop and web applications. Mostly database programs, speech server, allot of integration with commercial software. I use my laptop mostly at my desk, but I love taking it to the clients office and making changes to the apllication I'm working on there. We do have a vpn and I could remote-in But I love the moblity of my laptop. Currently using a hp NX9600, a big heavy desktop replacement. We rotate our equipment every 3 years. So I guess I'm looking for power & mobility. I'm really tired of toting this monster around.

Don't know if you'll get this response or not. I have the Dell XPS M1210 (Model before the 1330). Let me say that you definitely don't want to deal with such a small screen when working with Visual Studio. With the toolbars on the sides you barely have any space to code. When I got the Laptop I planned on using it exclusively at home and on the road...but after a month or so I caved in and bought an XPS 410 desktop w/ a 20" monitor.
