Battle of the DSLRs

Hi! I've been browsing the net for nikon vs nikon, nikon vs canon, nikon vs canon vs pentax, etc but I still can't figure out what to buy. My top 3 are nikon d80, nikon d40x and canon 400d. They're all pretty equal in terms of functions and performance although their prices does take its toll. I was just wondering what, in your opinion, would a 1st time DSLR user better buy considering the last film SLR I owned was a nikon f60. to top things off I still have 2 lenses left with me, a sigma standard lens and a nikkor 35-135mm lens. I'm planning to buy this weekend. Your opinions would really matter...Thanks all in advance!:-D

Have you held any of those three in your hands? They are so close in features and performance that it really comes down to handling and personal preference. Some people find the 400D too small for their hands while others think it is just perfect. Don't look at the specs. anymore. You've already narrowed down your range. Now you can choose based on how it feels in your hands, what feels most comfortable and which is easiest for you to operate.

I have a 350D (the predecessor to the 400D) and I have to say it's excellent. It has coped admirably with everything I've thrown at it (including low flying military jets!) and if I had to replace it today I'd almost certainly go for the 400D. I can't speak for the Nikons, but they have a good rep too. Personally I'd wander down to your nearest camera store, try them all out and see what you think. :)

Hi, You've probably checked dpreview.com and read through their exhaustive test of both Nikons and Canon? Having all of them in my hands (and use each for at least one day) I would personally go for d80 (d40x is lacking some importand features like bracketing, it is "too entry-level" in my opinion). This is the best performing camera in this companion, and the extremely ergonomic UI in this Nikon series is beating it's competitors to the death - in my opinion. HAve also compared with Sony Alpha - not a match. Nikon is not a pretty or gadget-wow-looking camera, but it is totally robust, intuitive and ergonomic. And don't forget you have already some Nikon gear on board cheers -- modified at 5:06 Monday 9th July, 2007

If you've already got 2 lenses - I'd rather buy one of the nikons. Depends on if you need the d80 or if the d40x is enough for you. I got 1 old lens from my dad and so I bought the D70s. Great camera. And it works perfect with the old stuff - and the new one. (it didn't work with an old flashlight - but with the new one it works perfectly) Never photographed with a Canon. My father is a Nikon guy and so I got one too.

Ah Paul, atlast you are there. I've been waiting to consult this with you for long, but missed somehow. Anyway, I've fixed the aim at Canon 400D now. Will be buying it this weekend, if you have something to say like any other better models on this price range, please do. I'll definetly consider it.

Yeah I've read your posts. Frankly I thought CP members are all techie ppl. Didn't know there were a few autistic artists here. I've been pondering here[^] for photographer's preferences and nikon and canon are pretty much equal. darn i apologize for any redundant statements. I just want to cover every angle before I buy.

Go for the Canon. It is slightly better as the Nikons.

Cool, I am sure you will be happy with it, the 400D is a good camera. Are you getting the kit lens with it?

My uncle owns a 400d. seems very alien to me since I'm used to nikon. Well, well...that seems to be an answer.:-D Now for nikon d40x and d80. d80 is a bit bulkier than the other although its LCD is a bit bigger...not to mention $200 more expensive. I held the d80 at a local store and even though its quite big its very much light weight. Yeah I'm very comfortable with the d80 compared to canon products. Thank you very much for your advice. I guess I just needed to rant out my experience to finally come to a conclusion.

:) I currently have a Canon EOS 20D but to be dead honest if I were entering the market now I'd go for the Nikon D80. Some sweet lenses in the Nikon range (though I do like my Canon 24-70) and at the lower range Nikon build-quality is better. I find the Canon EOS 400D to be a bit too "plasticky." The Nikon D200 is also a very good camera at a great price. Still, you have to hold these things. You will spend hours with your eye to the finder feeling your way around the body and it must be comfortable and work the way you think. I am so used to the Canon way and feel now that I wouldn't want to change.

...ahhh yes, bracketing, how would a perfect sunset picture come into place without this and an orange filter.:^)

You're completely right (though I have no clue what ergonomic means). I have my decision. And the winner is the d80. Much obliged with all you help. (Where's the dancing icon??!?)

Sorry for dropping my post without explanations. So, what makes me say that is a thorough analysis of a few reviews, one of my favorite being the one of the French shop "FNAC". The differences are minimal, but the Canon seems to be better for
- handling "fast" chained shots (what I mean is taking continuous shots of something moving fast, like a rallye car for instance), the first shot comes quicker than for the Nikons, and are more regular
- the pictures taken with the built-in flashs are better. You can forget this if you use another flash light, but it can matter if you do not want to re invest 275 euros for a decent flash.
- color rendering seems to be nearer to reality with the Canons in the predefined modes ("portrait","child","landscape"). Again, if you make extensive use of A,S, or M, this does not matter.
As for the rest, Paul is right, it is a matter of feeling it alright in the hands. I personally owe a Nikon D50, because it was the best price/quality ratio when I bought it, but I reckon that the EOS350D is better, for having tested it (two friends of mine have bought it).

As others have said, you have to hold them in your hand and feel the difference. If you do take a lot of photos at night, go for the Canon as it have less noice at the high ISO speeds. If you plan to buy some expensive lenses later on, go for Canon as their top level glass is somewhat cheaper than Nikons. (For example Nikons 400 f/2.8 is 30 - 40% more expensive than Canons) Other than that, go for the one that feels best. I'm a Canon user, and if I should get my first DSLR today, I would still go for Canon. (I have two 1DMkII bodies).
