How MVP is calculated ?

It's an arcane art, but it usually involves coin tossing.

I'd have thought an infinite improbability field and a really hot cup of tea would be the answer..

Mmh, yes, ok, I misunderstood MVP status with Membership status. To be a MVP here, you must be helpful, patient, skillful, but lucky as well, since only people that vote for you bring you point for the MVP status. Too bad if you help people that are not grateful.

I often vote for good answers by others because I know that the vast majority of people will either fail to understand the answer, regardless of how patient the person who's helping is, or because they are generally ungrateful.

believe its different than MS MVP, as they are given to employees or the qualified.
Totally wrong. An MS MVP does not need to have any qualification ( I sure don't, I have no certifications and no degree ). An employee is exempt from being an MS MVP, if an MVP gets a job at MS, they lose their MVP as a result.

What is the criteria for MVP calculation ?
There is no criteria or calculation for this. Chuck Norris picks a bunch of guys and they'll be MVPs.

No no No! Chuck Norris picks on a bunch of guys, and who survives gets a MVP award.

oh cool. thanks for setting me straight :) i was way off the mark there :-O so it just depends on, your answers and manner on the board?
And someone has to nominate you. Once you get nominated MS will pay more attention to you. They will ask for area where you are active and watch them. After a two month period you get awarded, or not. (At least that's how the MVP-Leads in the UK seem to work)

I have taken to giving the short answer because of this. Since the nature of a lot of programming questions are from relatively inexperienced people I used to go to great lengths to explain my answer to their question. My efforts were invariably met with silence from the person X| so I started giving a terse answer and only elaborate if the person responds asking for more detail. :sigh: Even when the person responds asking for me to explain I have found that my explanation usually goes unrated. X| I always respond to anyone giving me an answer on a programming forum even if saying nothing else than thanks for the response or thanks for the link. It is only common courtesy to respond to anyone who has made an effort to help you. :) If the person gave me useful information I always rate their response with a 5 vote so they know that the information was useful to me and to thank them for helping. :-D I do not give low votes to responses that did not help me because the person was at least trying to help and as stated above I do reply with a thanks for the attempt even if the information didn't help solve my problem. :)
