Virtual PC 2007

Theoretically it will run any PC operating system that agrees with its fake hardware. So that's pretty much a yes.

I have installed a copy of XP in Virtual PC 2007, but is not detecting the USB ports. Until it supports USB devices, it will be a sub-class product.

It depends really on what you have to do with it. I use VPC mostly to test software for Windows, and I find it very nice, considering that it's free. It works, you can create diffed and undo virtual hard disk, so you are safe to mess with the VMs because you can always "go back". The only alternative is VMware Workstation, which costs $189. VMware Server is not very good for software testing. It doesn't even support file transfer between host and guest.

Quite difficult, since VPC is free. :)

In my experience, running Linux (Ubuntu in particular) in VPC is a pain. Never managed to get it working decently.

Yes, but it does not offer basic features like file transfer between host and guest, diffed disks, and so on.

Will Virtual PC 2007 run Linux/Unix or only Windows?
Yep - CentOS 4.4 runs pretty much fine on my laptop with VPC 2007

Should do, but I can't get ubuntu studio to capture the mouse...may be a dodgy install though, not mucked out my slaptop for months :)

Yes, I use that all the time.

diffed disks
I am not sure but I guess you can do that manually.
