Is there any technology for curing myopia?

Why?But wear glasses is not convinient, for example when I do sports.
Yes you can, but not ordinary glasses. I definitely saw some professional athletes with glasses. And, you can try contact lenses. -- modified at 7:25 Wednesday 11th July, 2007

The result of a hard lense shattering in your eye after being hit by a ball is not desireable. Trust me on that. Either wear sports glasses or have a laser correction (if possible). Soft lenses might be an alternative, but you have a hell of a time trying to get them out if they get pushed into the socket.

You can become short sighted, because it's in the family, or by overstressing your eyes. It has got nothing to do with a lack of "protection". Laser surgery is expensive and still a little risky. The best way to see sharp (C#??) is to wear glasses or soft lenses. Glasses: Very easy to handle and clean. You can take them off when you don't need them, clean them with your sleeves, give yourself a new face by choosing a new design, and so on. Soft lenses: Depends on your eyes. If you have very dry eyes, forget it. If your eyes are healthy, you should try them. They are very comfortable during (non-water) sports. Lenses must be kept clean with special liquids! Otherwise you may catch infections or the lenses will become white. If you decide to wear soft lenses, you should have additional glasses for morning/night. Laser surgery: Talk to a doctor. It only makes sense when your eyes won't get worse anymore.

Corinna, don't you have a bottle of NaCl-Solution handy? I used to buy them along with the cleaning fluid. If the lense was too dry or I got into a dry environment, I would occasionally drop a little of it onto my lenses - voila, no problem :)

I understand that this more or less is how radial keratotomy (the surgery for nearsightedness) was discovered. A young boy in Russia was hit in the eye with a light bulb which lacerated the surface of his cornea. After the eye healed, the vision in that eye was greatly improved. The attending doctor used this discovery to develop the surgical technique for correcting myopia. < I believe that this is more or less how it happened. >

Laser surgery also only works up to a certain level. I, for example, cannot have laser surgery, my cornea is not thick enough. Additionally, that won't change until they find a way to add refractive elements to my cornea permanently. :(

But what is to be done when I want to swim?

You can't make yourself short sighted by not protecting your eyes as a child. You can wear glasses, or you can have corrective surgery.

I notice that many of the doctors performing this procedure wear glasses. If the procedure was so safe, why aren't they having it done themselves? :|

I used to wear contact lenses, which worked fine in water ( just wear a swim mask ). I had to stop wearing them, because they hurt my eyes ( mostly due to laziness on my part, I suspect ). I cannot have surgery, it cannot correct my astigmatism, so I'd still need glasses. I have a swimming mask which acts as a pair of glasses, the mask corrects my vision. Having said that, I don't find I need good eyesight in the pool, unless I have my kids with me and need to watch them.

LOL - yeah, I'm still not game to have it done, although I can't anyhow, because of my astigmatism.

I'm sorry, but I have to comment on your english here. Well done. This is one of the nicest ways you could possibly put this idea. Anyway - when you say you have bad eyesight now, what do you mean? Are you short-sighted, or do you have other eye problems such as astigmatism?

Why not? My squash partner had WaveFront surgery on his eyes to correct his astigmatism.

I know a guy who had it done. In bright daylight he can see great, but he has bad problems in dim light. I prefer good sight in every light except 99% darkness, so I'd still wear glasses, even if I hadn't any astigmatism.

Sometimes it was not possible, because in an instant - I didn't find out why - my eye became so red and swollen that I wasn't able to open it anymore. Tears were streaming out of it like rivers, but the lense itself was hidden unreachably under the eyelid. Very uncomfortable situation. It happened mostly in the evenings. I threw away my soft lenses in 1997, since then I'm back to glasses.

But what is to be done when I want to swim?
I scuba dive and have had corrective lenses made that are attached to the inside of my dive mask. My husbands eyes are much better than mine but still near-sighted and he uses a standard mask with snap-in off-the-shelf corrective lenses. I'd be surprised if somebody doesn't make something similar for swim goggles. Judy
