Notepad Replacement

I know this has been posted a thousand times by different people, but I didn't need one at those times hence paid no attention. I want an editor that is reasonably light weight, runs on Vista and is capable of handling Unix text files. What recommendations do y'all have?

just installed (extracted it) it in vista wtf with the horizontal scrollbar in SciTE? i am not finding it beautiful at all , personally i hate to see scrollbars where it is not required

Beautiful? Beautiful?! If you are looking for a text editor to look beautiful, your looking at the wrong thing. How does it handle very large text files... That's an important feature. How well does it do syntax highlighting on multiple formats... That's very important. Can you add support for your own formats, or make changes to existing formats without needing the source code? That's an extremely nice feature! And good to know SciTE has it. A text-editor should be all about simplicity, quick to use keyboard shortcuts and support for syntax highlighting without being slowed down at all. I can't say that I have tried any other of the replacements mentioned here, simply because I have been using SciTE for nearly 3 years now. There may be prettier and even better text editors recommended here, but saying that there is something wrong with SciTE is way off base. It does it's job, and does it very well :) If your looking for pretty, maybe get yourself the newest version of MS Office and use Word as your text editor... Hi Have you considered VIM. It is an excellent editor that can be extended as you need??

I been using Crimson Editor for about 7 years!! Love the thing... think the guy stopped developing a couple of years ago, but made it open source when he stopped so anybody can do whatever with it. Nice, easy to use, text looks cool (syntax highlighting), customisable (macros), handles unix & windows text files, and tabbed interface for multiple files. Infact, it's on my swiss-army-usb-stick, since I can't carry visual studio/eclipse with me always! :) Tiny footprint and not resource heavy either. Even though it hasn't been updated recently - still beats the pants of alot of the editors available at the minute. http://www.crimsoneditor.com/

I use Vim for my text editor of choice. If your already comfortable with VI modal editing then Vim is a great tool. If your not then the question is how much are you willing to put into making editing easier. VI and Vim are a pain to learn how to use, but to this day I find CUA (Windows normal) editors so difficult to use that I have Vim install on my machine at work and home. I even use ViEmu [^]in Visual Studio. Before the flame war erupts, no I am not crazy. Yes I am a Unix Hacker from the days when that was a compliment. No I don't need you to explain to me how to use a mouse, Visual Studio CUA, etc, etc. Unlike most people who think VI users just don't get it I have learned to use CUA editors. I have even customized my Visual Studio key binding, templates, and such. I still find modal editing much easier to use. For those who have not learned it, my advice is stick with CUA. It takes a couple of months of practice to become proficient with VI and probably 18 months to really get good. I will simply point out that in my case I have already paid that price. I get things done so much more smoothly in VI that it is painful for me to use anything else.

Glad I read all the posts before suggesting Crimson Editor - now I can second it. I've used it for about 3 years. Syntax highlighting files can be found and updated with your own keyword. Sets added. NEver gave me a lick of trouble.

<ooo> <ooo> <ooo>Scarey stuff... *bows down to superior editing prowess* I lasted all of 3 minutes in VI before a quick "ctrl+alt+F2 -> gedit filename" was called! lol.. nothing but respect for anybody willing to spend time learning it! :) Have you ever seen the VeloType keyboards? You type by "chording" keys, difficult to master, but if you spend the time and the punishment, you end up typing twice the top speed of a traditional typist!! Have a look! :)

gVim is the best editor in my opinion, it can handle anything you want, although admittedly it is a bit steep to learn but it is worth it. http://www.vim.org/[^] http://www.viemu.com for some very good tutorials, everybody needs them.

I know I'm going to receive flack from this, but Notepad++ is by far THE BEST SIMPLE text editor. There are a few out there that are just as good, but more complex. Notepad++ keeps it simple with a simple notepad design and the ability to open multiple documents at the same time. here are some more features: * Multi View * Auto language detect and color * Formatting automation & customizations (for pretty coding) * East to use tab interface similar to Firefox
ASP.Net meets JQuery... Imagine the possibilities.

why don't you make our personal editor. Take scintilla and a couple line of c# and "ale iacta est"...

Always a passionate subject with developers... I like UltraEdit (http://www.ultraedit.com/[^] Its not free, but then, neither are good developers... Along with the usual features of a professional editor, it has one that I find impossible to live without, and I have seen in no other editor. "Column mode" lets you select (Rubber Band style) inside the text, entire columns, where you can pick out code that you would normally have to wind up deleting the whole line. ...other than that, it has the usual great features, most of them have....

It's not free, but I've always loved UltraEdit 32[^].
