I've got a fairly good typing speed and if I was posting once a minute (or two) then I either can't be reading much or writing much.

What is the big deal Smith# is making about 100 or so posts in one day? I did 140 the other day and then 120'ish the next :-> I think those kind of numbers are the norm for guys like CG :)

If you do 100 posts through out the day then that is (assuming 12 waking hours) one post every 7 minutes or so on average. That is sufficient time to read, understand and form a reasonable reply. If the posts were coming in at a rate of once every minute or two then that isn't enough time to read, understand and form a reasonable reply. The main complaint is that most of the replies consist of smilies or no more than a half dozen words. I'm not against replies that just say "You got my 5" or "I quite agree" or "That's very funny" and so on. It is just the volume of those replies that people find irritating.

Same thing here. There just needs to be a nice balance.

Unless someone has articles/threads open in different tabs, has spent the time reading them and commenting on them and posting the message...

I'm sure that having the PC download the pages in other tabs only really saves a few seconds here and there.

At best. I don't think there is much saving of a good number of seconds. It is possible to post 10 reasonable messages in a matter of few minutes, after having them open in the tabs for about 20 minutes, working through each message.
