As most of us 'google' now, does anybody do a secondary search using a different engine to see if any different results are shown or do you take google's word for it?

Google gives the result most of the time but if I feel that information returned by google is not enough then I use altavista.

I take google's word for it. I am a probable marketing victim on this one, but I really think that what google spits out is the best I can find. OTOH, I pretend as well to do what probably not everybody does: looking the search results sometimes until page 10. There are also interesting results on the 2nd+ pages.

Saved me editing my original post with what I do. Exactly the same - google only, but check loads of pages.

I do occasionally use other search engines but just for comparison rather than because I can't find what I want using Google. At the moment though it would be quite difficult for me to switch permanently just because I now have so many usability aids attached to my Googling, e.g., Google Toolbar functionality, including GMail integration (Live and Yahoo toolbars suck, for example) Firefox's Advanced Google Keys and CustomizeGoogle extensions. The latter also gives me one-click access to the other search engines if I need to, without having to re-type the search. (There's another extension which does similar.)

On any of those rare instances that google fails to bring up an answer, I look up for divine intervention. Seriously though, in most cases where the google results are not exact, simply trying out different keywords may help. Though google can break down a lengthy sentence and search accordingly, it works best when provided with a good set of keyword(s).

In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. Since then there has been skepticism about the significance of the energy savings that can be achieved and the cost in terms of readability of black web pages. You can Check-- about blackle :)

Well it does returns the best of the results...but not always. At times I shift to Altavista's Advanced search where many a times I found better results with its Advanced Web Search www.altavista.com/web/adv[^] Though Google's +,~ etc. Operators work...but as said not always.
