I'm getting as tired as everyone else of the crap that is going on so I'm proposing the following changes: - I've increased the threshold for messages to disappear if marked as spam - Only silver and above members can mark messages as spam - Your IP address can only vote a limited number of times a minute and also a limited number of times a day - Once you hit 5,000 messages then your profile will simply say "over 5,000 messages" Two more thoughts: 1. I'm tempted to add a "Kick this person out of the lounge" button. It would only be accessible by Gold and above members. Just how abused would this be? 2. I will be replacing the Silver/Gold etc ranking with a ranking based on your participation as an author and as a poster. If you answer questions in the forums that are well received you increase your status; same with your posted articles. You post rubbish and you go down. The only problem with this is how we reward those members who are simply great to have around. The ones who have interesting stories, incitefulinsightful comments, are great moderators of the mood, and whose participation makes CodeProject what it is. Good idea on the changes...!    As far as a [Kick] button, I would suggest that it gets treated as a vote, and after enough positive/kick votes, out that person goes!  The vote threshold should be higher for higher-ranked members...?    I like the other changes.  The "great to have around" members that you speak of can be rewarded by the community by placing positive votes on their messages.    Peace!

I agree that changes are needed, and I have no problem with your suggestions. As someone who posts, but doesn't write articles, I am pleased to see that you are considering access based on posting and answering questions. As far as abuse goes, most systems will be abused by a minority. This then, is a general appeal to 'gold' members to not abuse their position. Thanks, Tim

I really don't think this is such a good idea. Instead of kicking them out, could you not have the system just not display posts from these people, unless it's them who are logged in? This way they will see their messages, and that there are no replies - hopefully driving them away from the forums.

Possibly having (more) moderators would be the easiest way to improving the wheat:chaff ratio of the boards. There are enough long standing members of the community who'd be happy to do this. I'd also like to see the ability to delete posts removed once there is a reply to the post.

My only concern here is that it'll encourage the univoter idiots to move from the lounge/soapbox and attack the programming forums more heavily since they'll actually be able to do damage to their victims status this way.

Not sure about the abuse factor, but I'd recommend it only flagging someone for your attention and review rather than it happening fully automatically. You'd also need to worry about if the booted idiots would simply begin spamming their crap elsewhere. I'd also recommend it initially being a temp ban, and letting the idiots have a second chance after a month or six. You should probably require a reason for each ban request. This would be useful in filtering spite ban attempts and to let a booted idiot know what brought the hammer down on them.

And what would happened to the kicked one ? Would he be banned forever ? I am not really for it, everybody must have a second chance.

 I have started to write a thread in the suggestion forum yesterday yielding the exact same idea. And then I looked at the ranking how it was, and could not gather my thoughts together enough to come with a _real_ replacement, and canceled my post (I sort of also had the problem with rewarding cool people).

Thanks, Tim

Since the current system of becoming a gold member is time since registration, I think this could be abused in the long run. It would probably be a good idea to change this, or start an additional ranking system based on high votes from currently ranked members. Besides the current Silver/Gold/Platinum in time this would generate another rank system based of actual activity in the forums. And when this additional system will become pretty consistent, rights could be given to users based on this ranking which is closer to the truth of the actual activity of the user. I think a long term solution is needed for this problem because we've had it before and it's going to be there for us in the future too.

It should be accessible only by members with a status that cannot be achieved by waiting, downloading and posting rubbish. The only status they don't get by waiting is Platinum. We need a new ranking based on - posted answers in the programming forum - articles with rating 3+ - to reward the nice loungers: average score of the member's Lounge postings
