If the kid wasn't there you should have said, in your best Texas accent... Well, ma'am, I can take off these old boots and hat when I want to. You, unfortunately, will be a bitch 24 hours a day. Have a good day ma'am [while tipping hat].

I had never seen a black person until I was about 10 years old and I visited family in Cincinnati. I remember Chris Rock talking about how the Native American's have it worse than black people and he said, 'When is the last time you saw a Native American family just chillin' at Red Lobster?' I thought, last week. Just depends where you grow up. We also had kids of tourists facinated by the cows and horses at the Laura Ingalls Wilder pageant.

I had the opposite issue, I grew up in very diverse peoples, I never thought anything of it for ages. Dividing Words.... (March 2001) When I was young and full of life My family showed me a city full And forests filled with life too The world was a very large place With so very many people in it And I cheered for the knowledge. But when I entered school Through the jeers and names and snide comments on my size I heard near every day... I learned that I was different And the world grew smaller And I cried for the knowledge. At sixteen years of life grown While visiting one of my friends His sister brought a boy home One that was unacceptable For he was more like me than them On that day I learned my friend was black And the world grew smaller And I cried for the knowledge.

My friend teaches a 4th grade class in Garden Grove and was recently dictating a book to his pupils when a picture of two black people dancing came up. A student raised his hand and asked. Student1: Do black people really exist? A student replied. Student2: I saw one in LA once... and another... Student3: My mom said she works with one. By this time everyone was chiming in with encounters and stories of the elusive 'black person' It just struck me has odd/humorous, I suppose Garden Grove is African-American-less?

Yeah...there's no blacks in the O.C. And people seldom venture outside the Orange Curtain.

A Russian friend of mine once told me she saw her first black person around age 14, and then she asked her mom if he was sick or something :)

Yea, for Christmas we had gone to Chicago to see my sister. While walking around in Macy's department store, I had never received some many awful looks. Some people thought my boots and my hat were neat. This one lady walked by my son and said how horrible he looked in his boots and that she would never put her son in something like that. I thought my wife was going to beat the crap out of her.

I remember every black African or African-descended person I've ever met or noticed in real life, all 7 of them (I live in New Zealand). I've seen a few more I guess but I don't really notice people anyway and it can't be much more. However, even as a child I don't think I ever doubted their existence. It is kind of weird when you never actually see people of a particular race, even though you know there are millions of those people in the world. Brown people don't really register with me (as in, I don't notice them any more than white people), it is only black people I notice. They generally seem to be very good-looking although it is a small sample size :) There's one woman, I think she must be an American exchange student, who I used to see around town who is the most beautiful person I've seen in real life. And unlike models and movie stars, she has no stylists or air brushing, just her. She has such a beautiful face it's crazy. (I am so jealous)

I grew up in Fullerton -- city very close to Garden Grove. Went to Troy High School and then to UC Irvine. And I must agree with you here. The school and colleges were either hispanics, whites or Asians. After college, I moved to Cleveland and things were different there. I saw more black population in my first day or two there than my 10 years of growing up in Orange County. - Malhar
