Ecard / postcard spam - actually it does have a useful purpose
-
I'm still getting a boatload of this ecard / postcard spam and I've trained my spam filter to deal with it, however a friend emailed me to say that they sent an ecard and did I get it. I have always found those things very annoying and now have a legit reason to say I didn't get it and don't send anymore of them. I'm wondering now if those ecard companies who are legit know how badly they are going to get hammered by this spam as people increasingly filter out anything ecard related. Now if we can just get the same effect for all those tiresome "microsoft will send you money for forwarding this email" and all the other hoaxes that have been around since the last century that newbies still fall for and insist on mailing to everyone.

I'm getting PDF spam which is really annoying. Gets past GMail filters easily enough. Can't just block it either as clients send me PDF often enough.

I'm sure it's not a problem. This[^] is apparently the recommendation from the Greeting Card Association:
_If you are unsure if an e-card notice is genuine, we strongly recommend that you go directly to the publisher’s website to safely retrieve your e-card. To do this:
- Manually type the name of the card publisher’s website URL into your browser window.
- Locate the “e-card pick up” area on the publisher’s website.
- Take the card number or retrieval code information contained in the E-mail and enter it into the appropriate box or boxes on the publisher’s e-card pick-up area.
_

I keep getting loads of these, and the PDF ones to. When are they going to release email 2.0 to sort all of this nonsense spam?

So in other words yes it's a huge problem for them. 99% of their users are going to be out of luck with even the first step. Interesting. If I had stock in those companies I'd start selling it about now.

I was thinking about this just today when I had to delete a bunch of them. It could be another industry crippled by spammers. I know they have destroyed the effectiveness of email since often legit email is blocked or hidden in tons of spam.. Oh, those times when people keep emailing you to the point of hate mail because you do not respond without knowing their spam blocker is blocking your replies :mad:

Yeah we ran into that problem most heavily about 2 years ago and decided to start a support forum instead and we heavily encourage people to use it and we state that if they don't get a reply within 15 minutes during business hours their spam blocker probably blocked our direct email reply. The forum is totally the way to go though as a lot of people just search it instead of emailing now.

If it is really so, then the following algorithm is acceptable.
try { LoginToPayPal(); OrderCheckToMyBankAccount(); Thread.Sleep(); //till the account gets credited. NowOpenMessageBoxWithAV_Firewall_SpamFilterOpened(); //:-D } catch (BadNetiquetteException exBadNetiquetteException) { Debug.WriteLine(exBadNetiquetteException.ToString()); }
