I am just curious how many hours most cpians actually work. I have been doing programming for a while and find I have a fairly addictive personality, so hours work does not mean a whole lot to me. But, my loving wife is always rattling my cage about working too many hours. So I am just curious what number of hours is the norm for people who come on this site. For me, a problem I have is I love what I do and I have a commitment to deliver, even if it requires occasionally extra hours. On average I work about 50-55 hours a week with some 60-70 hour weeks peppered in. Just Curious? Aaron

40 hours a week. Any more and they'd have to pay me overtime (Which happends more often then i'll admit).... so its the employees job from there. Quite possibly the only benefit of contracting.

80-90 hours in an average week + 8-10 hours travelling. I probably earn less per hour than a burger flipper, but at least I enjoy my work. ;P

It's 11pm and I'm just stopping playing. I'm about to go and make the kids lunches for school tomorrow - now that's work.

It depends on how close we are to a deadline and if we count the hours I work at home. I never just work 40 hours but there have been times where I have gone several months in a row of 80 hour weeks and I do not get any overtime.

On my consulting work, I log about 15 - 20 hours a week. I expect I am far from the norm on this site. But, I have two other businesses that generate income for me.

My contract says 39 hours/week. Sometimes it is a little more, sometimes it is a little less, but in the average I actually work 39 hours.

You can do that? I wish I could as the only time I feel that I am away from my job is when I go on vacation and I do not bring any electronic devices with me...

Millionaire I am in the wrong profession or I entered the field too late... As for making gobs of money I believe the problem here is I get paid for 37.5 hours regardless of the actual time I work. I like to think that without the US overtime law I would actually get paid for my time but I am not sure. As a result right now, I probably make less than $20/hr worked which makes me think of the whole discussion yesterday abort the $20/hr job...

Somewhere between 35 and 40 hours. Sometimes more, depending on what and how much needs to be done. I try to be efficient, so that I can take it easy. Life's too short to spend in the office. :)

I average 40 hours. Much more than that and work is cutting into my personal life.

For me it cuts into the sleep. When I worked 80hr weeks I rarely slept more than 5hrs a day. I survived by a 20 minute workout each morning on a treadmill to get the blood flowing..

I used to be in that category but my girlfriend now prevents that so I am in the 50 to 60 category most of the time.

I average 40 hours. Much more than that and work is cutting into my personal life.

I strongly agree. It actually plays havoc into productivity and performance in fact.

Aaron

I hardly ever work overtime, unless we're in a pinch. I am usually far ahead of schedule, thus not needing to stay late. I will stay late when necessary, and I will stay late if a co-worker is in need also. Other than that, there is no valid reason that will keep me away from my family. They are paramount to me.
