from WP: Acoustic couplers are still used by people travelling in areas of the world where electrical connection to the telephone network is illegal or impractical. Anyone know what parts of the world that is? I want to make sure I never go to any of them.

...now that I have broadband internet. Not only that, I'm totally wireless! Man it feels good to not have dial-up anymore. :-D Sprints network is actually very fast, I haven't done any benchmarks yet but webpages load extremely fast.

We just updated to the 5 mbps DSL and it's pretty sweet. :) As for life being good -- in the space of 3 days, my wife and I lucked into a nice car and a nice little gaming system. The car is a 2001 PT Cruiser with only 26,800 miles on it. It's the limited edition package, so it's got the leather interior and is about the only car I've ever seen with in-dash CD and cassette. And, they took our previous car as a trade-in, which lowered the price enough to qualify for a discount of 0.5% on the interest rate. :-> The gaming system I found at my parent's garage sale this weekend. They usually run their sales from Thursday to Saturday, with Saturday being half off everything. And, they generally get a lot of stuff from other people to sell (we gave them several things). One of the items was a PlayStation Portable system with a $50 price tage on it. Being Saturday, I picked it up for $25! :wtf::-D Flynn

Is that Sprint PCS Mobile Broadband? EVDO Rev.A? I just switched to it. Very fast, for a wireless connection, comparable to the Earthlink DSL I just dropped. My unscientific benchmark are that through-put drops during rush hour. When everyone is talking on their cell phone!!! -- modified at 18:24 Monday 6th August, 2007

You should see if an ISP in your area implements CPIP[^]. It might be faster.

Please don't bother me... I'm hacking code right now.

EVDO Revision A. It will connect me to the PCS Mobile Broadband network when I am out of range of the EVDO. I get over 800kbps on downloads which is very nice. I can get up to 1.4mbps but I haven't seen that yet, I'v only had it for a few hours.

That's about what I am getting. What is cool is getting that kind of speed going down the freeway...someone else driving of course! Or working down by the river at the park nearby. Do you know about ##DEBUG?

When I was in college, I rented an ASR-33 Teletype [^] with built in Acoustic Modem from Western Union for a year so I could call in to the College Time Sharing system from my dorm room (this was back in the early 70s)...the coupler was sensitive enough to respond to my radio music when the right notes came thru...at night the green activity light would provide me with a light show  Steve

A Classic. I bet that baby kept your neighbors up at night. :) Since we're strolling down memory lane, I had the joy of using the 1130[^] in school. The best part was the console above the keypad that displayed the contents of the various registers one bulb per bit. Quite a show.
