I don't believe that the definition of a prime number requires it to be odd. The definition of a prime number is that it only has two factors, 1 and itself. Two is the only even number that fits that definition since all other even numbers have two as a factor. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not a mathmatician. -------------------------------- Of course reading a litte further into the replies now that point has been made several times over, hasn't it ;P

Yes, 2 is odd because it is the only even prime.

I consider all people who consider all prime numbers to be odd in need of better education. ;P

Exactly. Thus, not every prime number is odd. Did I miss something here?

As written, yes, but if you change it to: " If you consider only odd numbers may be prime, would you then consider the number 2 to be odd? " Then, no, I would consider 2 to be non-prime. Look at it this way... I know 2 is the only even prime, so when I write a Sieve of Eratosthenes program I don't consider any even numbers, and therefore 2 does not appear in my sieve!

The Math/Algorithm Forum has been around for a while now. I think about a year and a half or so...

Okay, now this is really funny. When someone says 'every day you learn something new', I think it means they learn something new to them every day. Just because a forum has been there for a year does not mean they knew about it. Nor does it seem to imply they meant the forum was new either. We have had DNA for quite awhile now, but as a civilization, its discovery is relatively new. But anyway, all in good fun!
