Besides, the only way we can improve is to seek and understand objective criticism of our work. Voting 1 and scuttling off is of no use to anyone. I'm completely with you on the voting one without a comment business, it's totally wet to hide behind what is essentially a very rude statement and that's just on a comment on the forums, to do it to an article is completely unacceptable. I like the idea of programming the forum to disallow a one to be voted without a text accompaniment.

It was becuase the first vote I got was within a few seconds of posting: whoever did it couldn't even have read it: that was what got me annoyed. I'm otherwise quite happy with the general responses and votes I get for my articles but, like you, I feel a 1 vote should have to be accompanied by some commentary.

I suppose I should know better than to react but I just posted an article and some bugger has given it a 1 without having the courage to leave a note telling me why they thought it was rubbish (maybe it is but at least tell me why you think that so I can try to make it better). I know that there are people here whose life mission is to 1 everything but that is just bloody annoying: for a change I wasn't being offensive, crude, belligerent, arrogant or generally displaying any of my finer qualities. Grrr.
<RANT DONE>You get used to it after a while. There's always some people willing to vote you down no matter what you write. Sometimes it's just people you irritated in the soapbox, sometimes it's simply people voting you down to keep their articles on the front page and others it's just idiots. In the end it usually balances out when a few people have had chance to read it and give honest opinions of what they think. My biggest critic BubbaJonBoy doesn't even read my articles but if I publish something he's got an opinion on he's straight in there.

Sometimes it's just people you irritated in the soapbox, sometimes it's simply people voting you down to keep their articles on the front page and others it's just idiots. In the end it usually balances out when a few people have had chance to read it and give honest opinions of what they think. Oh dear: I think I irritated everyone... Seriously, I don't care if someone gives me a 1 here or in the lounge: that's part of the game and one learns to expect it. <RANT DONE>I've read both your previous articles about contracting (in response to a thread I started in the Lounge) and have been sufficiently impressed and informed to not only vote each of them a 5 but to update my CV and start applying for contracts (today in fact!). If it's any consolation, I suppose writing a CV is quite a subjective topic; people have their own preferences in terms of how information is laid out etc. and he might not have agreed. I'm guessing the vote could have been from the numpty who's now added comments - still not entirely sure what he's on about though! All the same - thanks for some great articles and advice; I hope they don't dissuade you from making the effort to write future articles for the site. Dave
