Not sure if someone had posted this before, but I have not seen it here. Those number just keep climbing! By the time I get a new decent digital camera they will probably by 1 gigpixel ;) http://www.dpreview.com/news/0708/07082009canoneos1dsmarkiii.asp[^]

and come with a bugeye lens that simultaneously takes pictures at several dozen different focal lengths so you can have your fore, mid, and background all in focus in the final image.

-- You have to explain to them [VB coders] what you mean by "typed". their first response is likely to be something like, "Of course my code is typed. Do you think i magically project it onto the screen with the power of my mind?" --- John Simmons / outlaw programmer

Yeah, but you get what you pay for, a medium format hasselblad costs somewhere in the region of $45000, whereas the 1DSIII is $8k (US Dollars) Added to the there's no way the 'blad will do 5 frames a second Different applications entirely, just comparing megapixel counts is pretty much pointless...

Very true. Also, when you get past a certain point in MPixel's, the optics play more of a role: upping the pixel count doesn't improve the picture quality, you need to start investing in decent lenses. I have a Canon 400D and at the moment the camera is capable of producing photo's of better quality than I'm currently capable of taking, so for now the 400D is all I need.

well, I always think of the 4gp camera when I hear that http://www.gigapxl.org/[^]. Of course, it is a film scanning process, not a true digital collection.... still it is amazing what a multi-gigapixel image looks like, and after seeing one you realize why someone would want it. I peeked over at Hasselblad http://www.hasselbladusa.com/products/h-system/h3d.aspx[^] because I always used there sensors when someone posted about various megapixel sizes, but they haven't grown much, still at only 39 megapixels. Still if you buy it for me, I will gladly tell you the reasons why so many megapixels are good. ;P the problem with megapixels is really they are noticeable in power scales, you might not notice 5 to 6 megapixels without a trained eye, 5 to 20 megapixels is twice the horizontal and twice the vertical resolution, quite noticeable and very nice. :)

I also have a 400D ('enthusiast kit here in aus is bundled with the 17-85 lens), it's going to my mother when the 40D is released :D I'll also be providing a good home to a lonely 17-55 2.8, which should be a good all round lens :D

40D, excellent! I'll keep my 400D for quite a while I think. Mine came with the 18-55 canon lens, I've just bought the 90-300. I like the zoom but I am finding the minimum of 90 makes it hard to take photo's of closer subjects. If I ever manage to afford a 20D or 40D I'll keep my 400D and then I've got two bodies for two different lenses.
