Mozilla AdBlock Addon
-
I got to know the Mozilla AdBlock add on from the Daily News message and immediately installed it given the suggestion using it is theft. Hey, this is my machine and it is up to me to decide what enters it and what not irrespective of the time and effort put in by ad makers. It is the same as with virii, you can create one spedning a lot of time and energy but that does in no way deny me my right to not accept it on my machine, what do you guys think?

Personally I don't mind non-intrusive ads, and since they also finance many of the sites I visit it's ok with me - I do hate intrusive ads, and I have the no-script add-on for FF so I can control which JavaScript gets executed.

I also have mixed feelings on the subject. Part of me thinks - "Hey, these are *my* eyeballs, PC & bandwidth - so I will install adblock". But many of the sites I enjoy take time, effort, and raw cash to make & run. And unless I want to start giving over 10p every time I read (eg)www.codeproject.com/lounge.asp, then those resources have to come from *somewhere*. And as long as the Ads are visible but not getting in my way, its the lesser of the evils. If *every* (or even a significant fraction) reader of codeproject turned off ads, Chris would have to go back to duckbill platypus milking, and this site would disappear. Saying that, I do draw the line at adverts tracking me with cookies, annoying popups, and I do add the worst offenders to HOSTS file as 127.0.0.1... But as long as they don;t make too much of a nuisance, its in our own self interest to *keep* ads there. I'll stop before I get into a parallel rant about how "I don't vaccinate my child - which is ok, because all the other parents will..."! Iain.

Same here. Pop-ups and especially pop-overs are the spawn of the devil.

You do not want to block indiscriminately but you will want to be the one that controls what does and what does not get thruogh (this isn't fred). Too often you wonder 'how can I get rid of this?' only to find there is no easy way. Then they think 'if we make it too easy they will turn off everything' and so they make it hard. Crying foul play when there is some successful ad blocker is rather childish and is provocative. You could sponser a site by allowing its ads selectively which is a good thing and a site could mention it. But I do not like my freedom of choice being taken away from me. It is all a matter about respect I guess.

The truly obnoxious stuff is easy to block outside the browser. Just add a null routed entry in your
HOST
file.-- You have to explain to them [VB coders] what you mean by "typed". their first response is likely to be something like, "Of course my code is typed. Do you think i magically project it onto the screen with the power of my mind?" --- John Simmons / outlaw programmer

If you ever do have that rant somewhere, let me know. I have an
evil
solution to the problem in my things to do when I become World Emperor file.-- You have to explain to them [VB coders] what you mean by "typed". their first response is likely to be something like, "Of course my code is typed.
