Do most developers prefer to work alone or on a team
-
I prefer to work with at least one other person. Having someone to bounce ideas off is invaluable.

I think you are asking a very broad question, which really doesn't have anything to do with profession. Some people like to work alone, and some don't. I think it's more related to their personality (introvert vs extrovert), rather than profession. I prefer a mix, but on my own terms. I'm an introvert, but have adapted to the harsh reality that most people are extrovert! I want to be able to get away from excessive irrelevance once in a while. :)
-
I prefer alone because when you work in a group there is always that one idiot that screws everything up and makes me want to scream.

aye, just having someone to talk something through with is a great debugging tool hehe. It'll often be that whilst explaining and idea or some code that I'll spot a problem.
It sure can. The best part is that I can do all of that from the sofa, as my partner is also a developer...

Doesn't matter to me. -- modified at 10:03 Monday 20th August, 2007 And I get a 1 vote because it doesn't matter to me whether I work in a team or alone? How absurdly amusing.

I prefer to work with a team of supermodels all of whome need individual help. ;) It doesn't really matter to me, per se. I do get frustrated with a team at times, but it has its advantages as well as disadvantages. Same with working alone.

definitely alone. However, I can't. One advantage seems to be that I can delegate ugly stuff. Yeah, I'm a shit router.

It's becoming more and more obvious that you and I see eye to eye!

I prefer a team but with separate sections. It is nice to share a great success as part of a team. But you have to take care not to step on your teammate's toes.

Depends upon the project in the office i used to work in a team and in the home since i am working privately for my friends i used to work alone for a project, which may be of the windows based and web based.

Like most people have said here, I like to work alone but still have someone to bounce ideas off of. Usually when I work in a team, I end up spending a lot of time "discussing" (thats putting it lightly) why it should be done in one way verses another. The good thing that comes out of it is that I get a another viewpoint and sometimes back down as my solution is not always the best (hey I'm human)... However it seems that some team members feel as if they are never wrong and there solution (although completely wrong) is the best way...:wtf:

Fine with me! I always thought sloppy seconds was rather gauche myself. :)

Well, if asked this at interview you say you're happy to do both. :) Seriously, though, I am happy to do both - but it depends on the nature of the team. I don't enjoy being micro-managed in a team situation. But co-operation and exchange of ideas are fine.

I was rolling my eyes before you edited your post. I guess they missed your blunt opinions John. The idea that you had such a mild response shocked them into posting a 1 in hopes of bringing back the John they love so much. ;)

depends on the team depends on my role (i like to be the boss, but never happens as i know squat:rolleyes:) depends on the task (does each developer work on a key component and then they are meant to work together to magically link these components to a single app, or do a number of dev's have to work together with differing ideas for the same goal) my view on groups, is they are fine as long as there is a good manager and good spec's to follow.

that always reminds me of a story my grandfather told... when he was in the navy. He was on leave for only a couple of days in San Fran and didn't have enough time to get home to Alb and back before he shipped out. So he was wandering around and saw a line. It was a very long line and he had nothing else to do, so he hopped in to see what all the hub-bub was about. Being curious, but not curious enough to ask anyone, he stood in the line until he got up front, saw it was a line for ladies of the evening, so he sold his place in line and made a few bucks out of the wait. one man's meat is another man's poison. Just remember to sell your poisons. ;)
