What's the purpose of those things? :~

Leia: "Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope" Obi-Wan: "Well, Princess, I've been living all alone in a mud hut in the desert for nineteen blasted years (nineteen years! and I look like I've aged forty!) with nothing to do but harass Tuscan Raiders and babysit your idiot brother while you've been out gallivanting around the galaxy having parties and getting your hair done, so what say you let your hair down and show me just how desperately you need my help." ;)
