Hi. Not only that my ex dumped me a month ago (you'll remember) and that hasn't changed, no, now my energy provider has made a mistake that I'll have to pay for. They have two seperate divisions, with different IT-systems and different accounting, one providing electricity, the other one providing warm water and heating. So, I moved in in December, got a quote for 80 EUR a month for heating, 40 EUR a month for electricity. Electricity is paid bi-monthly and heating monthly. I gave them permission to withdraw the amounts from my bank account by signing pre-printed permission cards and sending them back. I got an electricity statement saying: "We will withdraw in February, April, June..." etc. What they did not say is that they were going to withdraw one extra downpayment at the end of January to cover for December. They withdrew 80 EUR to make sure I was covered, but when I read the statements, and I saw this payment, I naturally assumed it was the payment for heating and warm water, making a mental note "this works", and so I never checked for heating payments again. It turns out: They did not withdraw any. For 8 months, they have not gotten a single cent from me, because their permit card "...as usually was accidentally delivered to the electricity division, which forwards these cards. Sometimes a year late. We are deeply sorry. You have to pay anyway." Well, it turns out that the 80 EUR quote was a little to low anyway, the monthly downpayment was corrected to 250 EUR per month for 2007. I tried to explain: "Ma'am, I got the key in November, the reading was from the beginning of November, the end reading from February... You just projected at least a 3 month period into one month, and your software calculated that downpayment." "We are deeply sorry. We cannot change the downpayment because we have not received ANY payment from you this year. But do not fret, the amount will automatically be corrected in July or August 2008. And you will get back whatever you payed to much, but without interest." ARGH! ARGGGGH!!!! I am going INSANE here. My monthly load just increased by 250 EUR, which is _kinda_ hard on me (I have to get another job). I needed to vent. Sorry.

You have my sympathy. When I moved into my current rented house the previous tennant owed £250 pounds on the electricity which I agreed verbally with the power company I would not be paying. Several months later they sold the debt to gansters in Manchester who kept threatening me until I agreed to pay up. They then claimed never to have recieved my cheque and initiated court proceedings. When I send another cheque they cashed both, taking £500 I could ill afford. Needless to say if such a thing were to happen again I'd be a lot less likely to pay up and alot more liekly to pay them a visit and practice my undecorating skills.;)

Nothing is exactly what it seems but everything with seems can be unpicked.

In my case it was an interesting too. My telephone number which was assigned to me three years back had been with some one else about six years back from then. But even now when I go to an 'Automatic Billing Machine' of Chennai Telephones (http://chennai.bsnl.co.in/[^]) I have to choose my name since it shows all the persons that had (and has) hiterto owned (or owning) the telephone. The previous jerk owes about 5000 INR (121.75 USD) as outstanding still to the telephone company. :)

I remember splitting those bills into pieces with my Toronto housemates and still wondering what was going on. And we wouldn't even use the dryer. We had hydro bills that were $400 BEFORE I got on the "PRO-RATED" plan. Nasty. Nasty either way. I like bread, but try to eat Flax. All-white will kill ya... And while I'm saying the word nasty - good riddance to the woman if she wasn't the right one. If she can't see a good thing you can't make her. Part of our DNA - has its +'s and -'s. Shog4ever

When I moved, the electricity account# changed, but my telephone banking setup was still going to the old #. After several months, I got a pay-now letter. Luckily, the old account had a huge credit by then, and just got transferred over.:-O

And rightly so, as you should never have sent one. Why would you assume responsibility for someone else's debt?

Mostly because the last time I had a dispute with someone who was able to damage my credit rating by lying, perjury etc it cost me my only opportunity to purchase a house. Ongoing losses currently running at £150,000. Unfortunatly the credit rating agencies are not much beter than gansters themselves in many cases ( I got personal proof they were holding information illegally on me and lying about it for example ). £250 would have been a small price to pay to maintian my credit rating and prevent a court case which despite being a slam dunk for me would still have end up costing more than £250 no matter what. My boss at the time would have sacked me as well, just for the hell of it, if I had to take time off at short notice to deal with it. As I say if it happened again I wouldn't pay up and would if necessary pay them a visit to convince them that it was not worth their while persuing me. I can be very convincing in person :)
