Ubuntu, Kubuntu or Xubuntu?

Hi. I want to make my first steps into the realm of Linux and I decided to go with one of the Ubuntu-related distros. I have a pretty lousy Athlon XP 1800+ and 512 MB of RAM. Which of the above versions would be better suited? Thanks.

I'd go with Kubuntu. The difference is in the GUI, and KDE is a lot easier to handle for someone who has no previous Linux exposure.

Kubuntu also seemed most appealing to me, but I was worrying about performance. If it's not an issue, I'll just start the download right away.

The performance wouldn't be a problem. I'm running Ubuntu on my notebook with similar hardware specs and there is no problem with it. Although I perfer KDE for Desktop, Kubuntu is a makeshift in my eyes. I would rather suggest you ubuntu. regards pdluke

KDE is indeed more of a resource hog than GNOME. However, if you install Kubuntu, you can always install and switch to GNOME later. Packages for GNOME should be readily available.

I have an old pc, Celeron 800 with 128Mb RAM running Kubuntu. OK, i could do with more memory, but it runs fine for what i need (web browsing, email, the basics....

GNOME surpassed KDE among desktop environments
This might be due to inertia rather than explicit choice. We've been installing lots of different Linux distributions here, and Gnome seems to be the default for most of them. (Having said that, I didn't pay that much attention to the desktop side, since it was an SNMP daemon we were testing, so I spent most of the time using a terminal window).

I have a Athlon-XP1700+ with 512 MB RAM. Gnome is running fine here. As far as I know, KDE is quite a bit larger. Otoh, you could go for Xubuntu, if you could live with a little less desktop-integration of your apps.

This is because Gnome is default for Ubuntu, the more people use it the more uses Gnome. The reson that Kubuntu wasnt so popular is that ubuntu developers were far more concerned about version with gnome...
