Original from: Is you Internet access restricted in office?[^] Is your Internet access restricted? Is your School, University ,Office or Government not allowing you to access famous web sites like Orkut, Hi5, Blogger, MySpace and other sites? Here are few tricks which you can play to access your favorite web sites by bypassing the ban Trick 1. Anonymous Browsing Use free Proxy Server which allows you to browse the web anonymously and access sites that are blocked. Here is the list of few proxy servers which I came across while Googling.. http://www.proxybrowsing.com/ http://www.hidemyass.com/ http://www.browserjump.com/ http://www.ninjaproxy.com/ http://www.kproxy.com/ http://proxify.com/ http://www.w3privacy.com/ Trick 2. Google Translation In case if your organization has blocked all the anonymous proxy servers, you can use Google Translator( also called as Google Language Tools) service as your proxy server. Google Translator translate pages from one language to another language. You can surf the blocked web pages by translating them from English to English(or any language which you desire). Replace WEBSITE with your favorite site address in the following URL and start accessing them http://www.google.com/translate?langpair=en|en&u=WEBSITE Example: http://www.google.com/translate?langpair=en|en&u=http://mgopinath.blogspot.com Trick 3. Google Mobile Search Google Mobile search service translates HTML pages to mobile phone browser compatible by removing style sheets and java script. You can use this service to browse the web pages in text only format. Replace WEBSITE with your favorite site address in the following URL to start accessing them http://www.google.com/gwt/n?u=WEBSITE Example: http://www.google.com/gwt/n?u=mgopinath.blogspot.com Trick 4. Search Engine Cache Enter the blocked URL in Google or Yahoo search engines and then visit the cached copy of the page. If you know any other tricks please leave the information about them as comments

We had a guy that fired over this (using an anonymizer). I did the cache/translation thing, and they came up to see what I was doing. Luckily for me, it was tech blog and I was looking for an answer to a work-related question. We had another guy that was caught plugging in a thumb drive. Don't be stupid guys. If they don't want you to do something, you can bet they can tell when you're doing it.

True plus it is in many employment contracts that your computer use may be monitored.

All web access is recorded, and in the last few months they've started using WebSense. It's never interfered in any work-related stuff I've needed to do. No big deal. Anything dodgy I want to look up ("Jenna Jameson demonstrates exception handling in COBOL.NET") I do at home.

If that's what you think I meant, then that says more about you than about me. I didn't say to worship the employer, I meant that deliberately undermining the guy who signs your check is not a good idea, because he's human and has feelings of being taken advantage of as well. Some people simply resent the fact that the universe requires living beings to expend effort in order to survive, and they tend to hold the employer responsible for this fact of life, because he's the most available target. You don't have a right to surf the web while you're at the employer's premises, using his equipment. So grow up, and accept the facts of life.

Easy now - you're the one who (humorously... i thought) cast this as a "stick it to The Man" topic. ;) Of course you need to respect the wishes of your employer. The bit people tend to forget is where the employer should respect the needs of his employees - and that it's usually up to the employee to communicate problems or limitations that prevent them from working efficiently. The re-occurring theme of programmers being blocked from CP or other tech sites speaks a lot about the lack of proper feedback regarding what tools are useful in the course of doing the job you were hired to do. I'm sure you didn't mean that employees should suck it up and just live with whatever arbitrary restrictions are handed down, but in my personal experience that's a behavior pattern all too easy to fall into, and that lack of feedback ends up hurting everyone involved.

Alright, many apologies for my hair trigger ( or maybe, hare-brained trigger ). Of course you are also correct that it's wrong when the employer takes draconian measures. And yes, the employer has a reasonable duty to accommodate the employees. It's often very difficult to discuss complex issues in a web forum, because of the lack of body language, tone of voice, and everything else involved with personal interaction. And web forums tend to encourage a "tit for tat" type of discussion, rather than a more open type. We agree that there needs to be a balance in the employment relationship, just as in every other relationship in life. :rose:

                                1. as said, that is a quick and obvious identification to anyone browsing log files (or computers doing so automatically) that you are doing what you should not be doing. It raises a red flag and places a target on your back, saying "fire my a..." 2) creative, but doesn't block content monitors and keyword log flags, or image caching, etc. It could easily make you feel you are safe when you are not. 3) See #2 4) not as creative, but still see #2
