5GB @ free Hotmail account

I spoted today that I have 5GB of available space at my free Hotmail account and "only" 2.890GB at gmail account. Is Google loosing this battle, or what? Well, I don't need that much space anyway, I was happy even with 100 MB limit.
Mostly, when you see programmers, they aren't doing anything. One of the attractive things about programmers is that you cannot tell whether or not they are working simply by looking at them. Very often they're sitting there seemingly drinking coffee and gossiping, or just staring into space. What the programmer is trying to do is get a handle on all the individual and unrelated ideas that are scampering around in his head. (Charles M Strauss)

I prefer GMail always. It's increasingly popular. But in normal users those who not related to computer industry, they may choose Yahoo or Hotmail. Some people choosing Yahoo mail only because of the popularity of Yahoo Messenger. Still GTalk is way back to Yahoo Messenger. New hot mail appearance and rendering is good but still it's not making sense for me. I've around 2.5 GB storage, a rich editor and 20 MB attachement size, moreover POP access and e-mail forwarding are there in GMail. I've subscribed in Many websites and newsgroups. Of course I'm getting a bunch of Spam daily. But Gmail is one of the best mail client who handling spam in a good way. Yahoo Mail seems to be slow for me. Earlier I was using Yahoo Mail and hotmail. Transition from those services was a bit difficult, but Orkut and GMail helped me alot for that. Now most of my contacts are there in Orkut. If hotmail or Yahoo can give better service faster than google, Yes I can think about it. I dont think that storage for mail make big sense. Still I am not used 50% of my GMail account. If it is for media, like photos or video, yes the size is a critical factor.

I do as well. I really like this feature --recently added-- that allows to open word, excel and power point documents without downloading them, by using the Google Documents feature. I don't even need to have Office installed.

Normal users not related to computer industry???? Come on Hotmail has been around way before Google was even born!!! It has been number one way before MS even started to think about this business. This is actually why they acquired Hotmail (get number one in each business line). Hotmail started a business of free accounts in a time when people were thinking it was ok to pay internet access on an hourly basis, even to pay for each email address you could have. So even people related to the computer industry sometimes have to make sure they know their classics...

I think the more important question is, do you actually need that much in one account? I personally use a few accounts, one is kinda like a "spam" account, which I use when I have to sign up to an unknown (or one I dont fully trust) to me site, etc. One is which I use for talking to friends, etc. One for work. Gets messy sometimes, but sure is enough space, and everything is separated. P.S. I use GMail :D

Sorry for phrasing it badly. I meant, the people not like software or such kind of computer related professionals. Even M.S has a good Product line, there are millions of people enjoying different free/paid Google services. Even if you compare the classics/renewed hotmail with GMail, you can see that still GMail is one step ahead of usability and services. What do you feel? In Software we had have many classics some of them are evolving/renewing according to the needs and taking the advantage of facilities available but some others still remains as classic.

Even M.S has a good Product line, there are millions of people enjoying different free/paid Google services. Even if you compare the classics/renewed hotmail with GMail, you can see that still GMail is one step ahead of usability and services. What do you feel? In Software we had have many classics some of them are evolving/renewing according to the needs and taking the advantage of facilities available but some others still remains as classic.

Yep, it is good to be a classic. There is this story about Cxcx Cxlx deciding to change Cxkx's recipe. They had so many complaints, they reverted back promptly!!! So Cxkx Classic is always the best!! (I have censored the names so as not to do any advertising, but I guess you know who is this huge company selling soda all over the world) And Hotmail is definitely classic as now there is Windows Live Hotmail, and Hotmail Classic.

It's just a matter of necessity. See, GMail deletes the spam after 30 days or so... HoTMaiL dumps it in your Inbox.
Last modified: 12mins after originally posted -- actually, that was lame and a cheap shot - Hotmail's spam filtering has been very poor in the past, and still is nothing to brag about... but it's improved considerably, and is hardly the worst of the major webmail providers. Frankly, this is a fine example of how competition ultimately benefits the end-user.

I actually had one phishing e-mail make it into my Hotmail account yesterday. I think I've received a few in the past, but for the few years that I've used it I cannot remember having an issue. I prefer the Hotmail account to Gmail. I don't like Google. They're worse then Microsoft. At least you know where Microsoft stands.
